The Secret Scripture (2016)
Directed by Jim Sheridan, The Secret Scripture is a drama based on Sebastian Barry’s 2008 novel of the same name. The film follows Rose McNulty (Vanessa Redgrave), an elderly woman who has spent decades in a mental institution. As the facility prepares for demolition, psychiatrist Dr. Stephen Grene (Eric Bana) reviews her case, uncovering a tragic past filled with love, betrayal, and injustice.
The story alternates between World War II-era Ireland and the present, revealing Rose’s younger years (Rooney Mara) and the events that led to her confinement. The film also stars Jack Reynor, Theo James, and Aidan Turner, delivering emotionally charged performances.
Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, 2016, the movie was later released in Ireland and the UK on May 19, 2017. While praised for its cinematography and performances, it received mixed reviews regarding its adaptation of the novel.
