The Durrells (2016)

The Durrells is a delightful British comedy-drama series that captures the warmth, humor, and chaos of family life in a foreign land. Loosely based on the autobiographical books by naturalist Gerald Durrell, the show recounts the real-life adventures of the Durrell family during their time on the beautiful Greek island of Corfu from 1935 to 1939.

At the heart of the story is Louisa Durrell, a recently widowed mother of four, who decides to leave behind her dreary life in England and move her family to Corfu in search of a fresh start. What follows is a colorful, heartfelt journey as the Durrells adjust to their new surroundings—facing culture shock, money troubles, eccentric locals, and, of course, the ups and downs of being a family with wildly different personalities.

The show strikes a perfect balance between comedy and emotional depth. Keeley Hawes delivers a standout performance as Louisa, blending strength, vulnerability, and humor in equal measure. Each of the children brings something unique to the story—from Larry”s literary ambitions to Gerry’s love of animals, which foreshadows his future as a famous conservationist.
