Caddo Lake (USA, 2024)

Caddo Lake is a clever thriller with a few cool twists and a premise that will keep audiences engaged. Produced by M. Night Shyamalan, it shares some of the hallmarks of his best work—strong atmosphere, well-paced suspense, and striking visuals that make the most of its eerie setting. Directed by Celine Held and Logan George, the duo behind the critically acclaimed Topside, the film focuses on the mysterious disappearance of a young girl in a swamp, its emotional fallout for her family, and a search that brings in some surprising sci-fi elements.

One of the film’s biggest strengths is its setting. The swamp and lake themselves feel like characters, with their murky, atmospheric visuals adding a lot of tension to the story. There’s an unsettling beauty to the film, with glimpses of wounded alligators and a grimy, claustrophobic environment that says a lot about the people living there. The actors, led by Dylan O’Brien and Eliza Scanlen, are also well-cast and committed, grounding the film in reality even as the plot takes some unexpected turns. Their performances sell the emotional weight of the story, making sure that we’re invested, even when the film introduces some out-there twists.

While the movie’s core mystery might feel familiar to binge-watchers of suspenseful Netflix series, it still keeps you guessing as new pieces of the puzzle are revealed. The use of colors and the film’s visual language is particularly effective, adding depth to certain scenes and helping differentiate moments of the story. However, in its pursuit of unraveling the mystery, Caddo Lake sometimes sacrifices the emotional depth it strives for. A key late scene between Eliza Scanlen and an older male figure, which should serve as the film’s emotional center, ends up being more about solving another piece of the puzzle than delivering a truly emotional payoff.

That said, Caddo Lake is still a solid, engaging thriller for those who love smart mysteries. It delivers the satisfaction of confirming some of your guesses while throwing in a few unexpected surprises along the way. Just don’t expect to feel too eager to visit that swamp afterward.
