“HE WAS FIT, HEALTHY AND FULL OF LIFE”: FAMILY’S HEARTBREAKING TRIBUTE TO 24-YEAR-OLD RUNNER WHO DIED DURING HALF MARATHON
Ross Williams-Griffiths had spent months preparing for the Cardiff Half Marathon.

He was running alongside his girlfriend to raise money for a cancer charity when tᩚraɢedy struck — now, his family hopes his story can help save another life.

The family of Ross Williams-Griffiths is mourning the loss of a much-loved 24-year-old whose life was cut short while taking part in the Cardiff Half Marathon.

Ross, from Bargoed in Caerphilly, Wales, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest during the race on October 4, 2026.

Despite the efforts of medical teams, he could not be saved.

In the days since his passing, his family has shared a moving tribute to the young man they describe as kind, caring and full of life — someone who brought laughter, loyalty and warmth wherever he went.

Their words have painted a picture of a young man whose future was full of possibilities, and whose absence has left a profound void in the lives of those who loved him.

RUNNING FOR A CAUSE CLOSE TO THEIR HEARTS
Ross was taking part in the 13.1-mile race alongside his girlfriend, Katie Bowen.

The couple, affectionately known as “Team Griff-Bow”, were running to raise money for Tenovus Cancer Care, a Welsh charity supporting people affected by cancer.

The event was a challenge they had prepared for over several months, approaching their training with commitment and enthusiasm.

For Ross, running was one of many activities he loved.

He also enjoyed football, golf, snowboarding and bodyboarding, embracing life with energy and determination.

He had recently begun attending local running-club sessions alongside his brother, Rhys, and Rhys’ fiancée, Jayde — building friendships through a shared passion for the sport.
“KIND, CARING AND FULL OF LIFE”
In a tribute released through race organiser Run 4 Wales, Ross’s family described him as a young man who made people feel welcome wherever he went.

They said he was kind, generous and hard-working, with a special ability to bring people together.

Whether among family, friends or colleagues, he was remembered as someone who offered warmth and laughter.

Ross had also been building a promising career at GE Aerospace, where his dedication and work ethic earned the respect of those around him.

His family said the support they had received since his passing had been overwhelming, expressing gratitude to everyone who had reached out during their grief.

Behind the public tribute is the loss of a son, partner, brother and friend whose everyday presence meant so much to the people around him.

A FAMILY HOPING TO RAISE AWARENESS
Alongside their grief, Ross’s loved ones have chosen to share his story for a reason beyond remembrance.

They said the exact cause of his dєatᩚh had yet to be established and hoped that raising awareness of sudden cardiac arrest could help other families.

Their message was deeply personal: if speaking publicly about Ross’s experience helped even one family avoid a similar heartbreak, they would consider that part of his lasting legacy.

Sudden cardiac arrest is a medical emergency that occurs when the heart abruptly stops pumping blood effectively.

It can affect people who appear fit and healthy, although the circumstances and underlying causes vary from person to person.

Ross’s family has also supported fundraising efforts in his memory, including an appeal to help fund cardiac screening and donations to bereavement charity 2wish.

THE RUNNING COMMUNITY REMEMBERS ROSS
The loss has been felt throughout the running community and among those involved in organising the Cardiff Half Marathon.

Run 4 Wales chief executive Matt Newman offered condolences to Ross’s family and friends, saying the organisation remained focused on supporting them.

He also praised the event and hospital medical teams who responded with speed and professionalism.

For fellow runners, Ross’s story is a painful reminder that behind every race number is a person with loved ones, ambitions and a life extending far beyond the finish line.

A LEGACY BUILT ON KINDNESS
Ross had trained for the half marathon with determination, sharing the challenge with his partner and supporting a cause that mattered to them.

His race ended in tᩚraɢedy, but his family hopes the way he lived — with generosity, enthusiasm and care for others — will remain what people remember most.

They cannot change what happened on that October morning.

But by sharing their memories and encouraging greater awareness of cardiac arrest, they hope something meaningful can emerge from their loss.

Ross Williams-Griffiths was more than a runner who died during a race.

He was a beloved young man, a devoted partner, a valued colleague and a member of a community that will not forget him.

His family’s hope is that his story will honour his memory — and perhaps help another family find answers, seek support or recognise the importance of heart health.
