“THE OCEAN WAS HER HAPPY PLACE”: Beloved Swimmer Janine Lochrenberg, 65, diᩚєs in Shark Attack in South Africa
Janine Lochrenberg loved the water and regularly joined fellow swimmers for open-water sessions.

But during a morning swim off South Africa’s coast, a sudden emergency turned a familiar routine into a tᩚraɢedy that has devastated her friends and swimming community.

A 65-year-old woman has died following a shark attack off South Africa’s southeastern coast, leaving her family, friends and fellow swimmers mourning a woman remembered for her kindness, intelligence and deep love of the ocean.

Janine Lochrenberg was swimming with a group near Orient Beach in KuGompo City, formerly known as East London, on the morning of Tuesday, October 20, 2026, when the incident occurred.

According to witnesses quoted by South African broadcaster SABC, Janine signalled that she was in trouble while in the water.

Other swimmers quickly realised she had been bitten by a shark and rushed to help.

They brought her back to shore, where efforts were made to save her.

Despite their response, she was pronounced dead at the beach.

Police confirmed that officers attended the scene and found her body with open wounds.

An inquest has been opened into her dєatᩚh, and the species of shark involved had not been identified in the initial reports.

A WOMAN WHO FOUND HER JOY IN THE OCEAN
For Janine, swimming was far more than a hobby.

It was a part of her life that brought her happiness, friendship and a sense of connection with the natural world.

The East London Open Water Swimming community shared an emotional tribute following her dєatᩚh, remembering her as a much-loved member of their swimming family.

“She was never one to seek the spotlight,” the group said, describing how she quietly pursued the activity she loved.
“The ocean was Janine’s happy place.”
The tribute also recalled her beautiful smile, gentle kindness and the meaningful presence she brought to the people around her.

For those who regularly swam beside her, the sea had been a place to share experiences, build friendships and enjoy moments together.

The news of her dєatᩚh has left a painful absence in a community that had come to know and value her.

A MORNING SWIM THAT TURNED TRAGIC
The attack occurred at approximately 7 a.m. local time, as Janine took part in an open-water swim with other people.

A fellow swimmer told SABC that the group responded after she indicated she was in distress.

Witnesses described serious injuries to her thigh and upper arm.

The swimmers brought her ashore, and a medic within the group attempted to help her.

She was nevertheless pronounced dead at the scene.

The swift response from those nearby could not prevent the tᩚraɢedy.

Authorities have not publicly confirmed the shark species responsible or all the circumstances surrounding the encounter.

The investigation into her dєatᩚh remains ongoing.

FRIENDS REMEMBER HER KINDNESS AND INTELLIGENCE
Following the announcement, tributes appeared from friends who remembered Janine not only as a dedicated swimmer but also as a thoughtful and talented person.

One friend described her as exceptionally intelligent and gifted, but said her kindness and ability to listen were among the qualities that stood out most.

Another recalled sharing sea swims, reservoir swims and river adventures with her, expressing heartbreak at the loss of someone who had brought so much to their shared experiences.

Janine was also described as a recently retired nuclear radiographer and a musician.

She was a member of the Viva Musica Ensemble, according to reports about her life.

These memories have helped paint a fuller picture of the woman behind the headlines: someone with interests and friendships that extended well beyond the beach where her life ended.

BEACHES CLOSED AS AUTHORITIES INVESTIGATE
Following the fatal attack, the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality announced the closure of Orient Beach and nearby Eastern Beach until further notice.

Authorities urged members of the public to follow safety instructions and exercise caution at other local beaches.

Police opened an inquest to investigate the circumstances of Janine’s dєatᩚh.

The shark involved had not been positively identified in the initial reports, and officials had not announced a wider wildlife-control measure in connection with the incident.

Although South Africa is known for its marine wildlife, fatal shark encounters remain uncommon.

Experts note that interactions between people and sharks can be influenced by several factors, including human activity in coastal waters and changes in marine environments.

For Janine’s fellow swimmers, however, the immediate concern has been the loss of a friend whose love of the water had brought people together.

A LOSS FELT ACROSS THE SWIMMING COMMUNITY
Open-water swimming often creates close-knit groups whose members share early mornings, challenging conditions and a mutual appreciation for the sea.

Janine was part of such a community.

Her friends knew her through the routines and adventures they shared, from swimming along the coast to exploring other bodies of water.

Her dєatᩚh has left those connections marked by grief.

The tributes shared in her memory have focused on the qualities that made her special: her quiet warmth, her intelligence, her kindness and the joy she found in doing what she loved.

For people who swam alongside her, familiar places on the water will now carry memories of someone who is deeply missed.

REMEMBERING JANINE LOCHRENBERG
Janine Lochrenberg was 65 and had recently retired from her career as a nuclear radiographer.

She was a musician, a dedicated swimmer and a friend whose presence mattered to many people.

Her dєatᩚh has brought renewed attention to the risks of sharing coastal waters with marine wildlife, but her loved ones are also determined to remember the life she lived rather than allowing the tᩚraɢedy to define her entirely.

The ocean had been a place of happiness for Janine — somewhere she could find freedom, friendship and moments of peace.

Now, those who knew her are left with memories of her smile, her gentle kindness and the many hours they shared in the water.

Her dєatᩚh has left an enormous hole in her swimming community, but the love expressed in the tributes to her reflects the lasting impression she made on the people around her.
