“YES, TWO BROTHERS”: RUTE CARDOSO’S HEARTBREAKING ACCOUNT OF THE NIGHT SHE LEARNED DIOGO JOTA WAS GONE
She was waiting for her husband to reply to a message about their wedding when a phone call changed everything.

In a deeply personal account, Rute Cardoso has recalled the desperate search for answers that ended with confirmation that Liverpool star Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva had died in a car 𝔠r𝘢sh — just 11 days after her wedding.

For Rute Cardoso, the night began with a message she hoped her husband would soon read.

She had sent Diogo Jota a video of the surprise dance she and her bridesmaids had prepared for their wedding.

It was a happy memory she wanted to share with him as he travelled back towards England.

The message was delivered.

But Diogo never opened it.

In the hours that followed, the unanswered message became part of a desperate search for information — a night of growing anxiety, unanswered calls and a conversation with Spanish traffic police that Rute would never forget.

Her account, featured in the new biography Diogo Jota: Forever In Our Hearts, offers a deeply personal perspective on the tᩚraɢedy that claimed the lives of the Liverpool footballer and his younger brother, André Silva, in July 2025.

THE MESSAGE THAT NEVER RECEIVED A REPLY
Diogo and Rute had married just 11 days before the 𝔠r𝘢sh.

They had known each other since their school years in Portugal and were building a family together with their three children.

On the night of the accident, Diogo and André were travelling through Spain on their way back to the United Kingdom.

They planned to stop at a hotel in Benavente before continuing their journey.

Rute recalled sending Diogo a message wishing him a safe journey.

He replied with an emoji, then she reminded him to keep his eyes on the road.

It was the last message he answered.

At around 10:40pm, Rute received the video of the surprise wedding dance from their photographer.

She shared it with a group chat before sending it to Diogo, telling him she had something to show him when he stopped.

The message reached his phone, but it was never read.

At first, there was no reason to panic.

She knew he was travelling and expected him to respond when he had arrived safely.

But as the night went on, the silence became increasingly unsettling.

WHEN THE MESSAGES STOPPED ARRIVING
Rute later noticed that her messages were no longer being delivered as expected.

She sent more messages, hoping to establish contact, but the replies never came.

As the brothers failed to arrive at their planned stop, her concern grew.

She contacted a friend who knew about the hotel arrangements and then called the hotel in Benavente herself.

The receptionist told her that the two men had not checked in.

Rute also contacted André’s girlfriend, Paula, who said she had not heard from him for several hours.

She tried reaching a hospital in the area and attempted to contact Spanish police, but she could not obtain the information she needed.

With every unanswered call, the uncertainty became harder to bear.

Her family began helping her search for answers, determined to find out why the brothers had disappeared from contact.

THE PHONE CALL THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
Rute’s sister suggested contacting their uncle Vítor, a lorry driver who worked in Spain and might be able to reach the traffic police using a Spanish telephone number.

Vítor agreed to help.

He took another phone and called the Spanish traffic police while keeping his Portuguese phone connected to Rute.

She listened as he spoke to the authorities.

Then she heard him say four words:
“Yes, two brothers.”
At first, Rute and her sister were confused.

They wondered how the police knew the two men were brothers.

But the conversation soon took a devastating turn.

Rute recalled hearing her uncle tell her brother-in-law that the bodies were being taken away, apparently to the mortuary.

The words brought the possibility she had been desperately trying to avoid into focus.

She contacted Diogo’s father and André’s girlfriend, asking them to come immediately.

Even then, she struggled to believe what she was hearing.

“THIS IS A JOKE.

IT CAN’T BE TRUE.”
Rute described being unable to accept that the news could be real.

She repeatedly told her friend Catarina that it could not be true, insisting that there was no way the tᩚraɢedy could have happened.

Two psychologists arrived to support the family as they tried to process the unfolding events.

Eventually, a Spanish police officer spoke to Rute directly and formally confirmed Diogo’s dєatᩚh.

The uncertainty had ended, but the reality was almost impossible to comprehend.

Only days earlier, she had been celebrating her wedding and looking ahead to the life they had planned together.

Now she was trying to understand how her husband and his brother could have been lost so suddenly.

In her account, Rute recalled pacing for hours, unable to settle as she tried to process the news.

The night had become a dividing line between the future she had expected and the life she would now have to face without Diogo.

THE JOURNEY TO THE 𝔠r𝘢sh SITE
After receiving confirmation, Rute travelled to the mortuary to collect Diogo’s belongings.

She asked the driver to follow the same route the brothers had taken, wanting to see where the accident had happened.

When they reached kilometre 64, she saw the wreckage of the vehicle still at the scene.

Overwhelmed, she tried to get out of the car and move towards it.

A police officer stopped her, concerned that seeing the wreckage at close range could add to her trauma.

She later reached the mortuary, where she asked to see her husband.

According to her account, she was not permitted to view his body directly.

Instead, officials showed her his outline on a stretcher through a small window.

She was given his watch, wallet and wedding ring — ordinary personal belongings that had suddenly become precious reminders of the man she had married less than two weeks earlier.

The objects could not explain what had happened or ease the pain of losing him.

They were simply what remained for her to take home.

A FINAL JOURNEY BACK TO PORTUGAL
Rute then travelled back to Portugal in the van carrying Diogo’s body, accompanied by her friend Catarina.

The journey marked another painful chapter in a night she had struggled to believe was real.

Diogo was 28 when he died.

André, 25, was also lost in the 𝔠r𝘢sh.

Their deaths devastated their family and sent shockwaves through the football world, where tributes poured in from Liverpool, Portugal’s national team and former teammates.

For Rute, however, the loss was not simply the dєatᩚh of a celebrated footballer.

It was the loss of her husband, her childhood sweetheart and the father of their children.

The public knew Diogo for his achievements on the pitch.

She knew him through years of shared memories, family life and plans for the future.

A BIOGRAPHY THAT PRESERVES HIS MEMORY
Diogo Jota: Forever In Our Hearts, written by Portuguese author and former professional footballer José Delgado, brings together memories from Rute, Diogo’s parents, former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp, teammates and many others who knew him.

The book explores his career and achievements, but also the person behind the footballer — his relationships, personality and bond with his brother.

Liverpool FC has said that profits received by the club from the book will support a grassroots football programme established in Diogo’s name through the LFC Foundation.

For those who loved him, preserving these memories is a way to ensure his life is remembered for more than the circumstances of his dєatᩚh.

ELEVEN DAYS AFTER A WEDDING, A FAMILY’S WORLD CHANGED FOREVER
Rute’s account is heartbreaking because it captures the gradual collapse of hope.

First came a message that went unread.

Then the missed calls, the hotel that had not received the brothers and the desperate attempts to reach someone who could explain what had happened.

Finally came the words she heard through her uncle’s phone — words that transformed uncertainty into a reality she could barely accept.

Her story is not only about the moment she learned of the 𝔠r𝘢sh.

It is about the love and ordinary family life that existed just days before it, and the devastating absence left behind.

Diogo Jota and André Silva were remembered around the world for their footballing lives, but to Rute and the people closest to them, they were first and foremost family.

Through her memories, the biography offers a glimpse of the personal loss behind the headlines — and helps preserve the lives, relationships and moments that made the two brothers so deeply loved.
