SOLDIER AND WIFE WELCOME RARE QUADRUPLETS AFTER FERTILITY STRUGGLES, BECOMING PARENTS OF SIX
A U.S. Army soldier and his wife experienced an extraordinary surprise when they discovered they were expecting quadruplets after years of struggling to conceive, ultimately bringing their growing family to six children. Sgt. Lee Schiefelbein and his wife Alexis welcomed four healthy babies—Brea, Aidan, Curtis, and Dominic—on November 19, 2012, following a high-risk pregnancy.

The couple, stationed at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, were already raising their two-year-old daughter Gabby alongside Lee’s son Jacob from a previous relationship. After using fertility treatments to expand their family, an early ultrasound at six weeks revealed the astonishing news that Alexis was carrying four babies. Given the extreme rarity of quadruplet pregnancies, which occur in roughly one in 800,000 cases, Alexis received specialized prenatal care at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Despite doctors discussing selective reduction due to medical risks, the couple chose to proceed with all four children.

At 30 weeks, Alexis delivered the quadruplets via cesarean section. Each newborn weighed around three pounds and spent 52 days in the neonatal intensive care unit before safely coming home. Managing four newborns alongside two older children quickly transformed their daily routine into a round-the-clock military operation of feeding, diaper changes, and endless laundry. Lee, serving with the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, balanced early morning shifts with assisting Alexis at home. With strong support from their military community and family, Lee and Alexis embraced the overwhelming exhaustion as an incredible blessing, demonstrating how unexpected challenges can bring immense joy and transformation to family life.
