JUST DAYS EARLIER, SHE HAD SHARED A HAPPY FAMILY MOMENT — THEN EVERYTHING CHANGED

Only days before Erin Piacenti was killed in Times Square, she appeared in a pH๏τograph that showed the life she had spent months building with her husband and their newborn daughter. She was smiling, holding baby Madison, with her husband Frank beside her. The image represented a quiet family milestone after five months of maternity leave. By the following week, it had become one of the last public glimpses of a young mother whose life was suddenly cut short.

Piacenti, 32, had recently returned to her position as a Bank of America vice president in Manhattan. Her daughter had been born in March, and her maternity leave had given her several months at home. In the days before her return, she reflected on the experience and expressed graтιтude for the time she had been able to spend with her child. She and Frank had also recently marked their second wedding anniversary. Their daughter had been baptized, and the family had traveled together during the summer.

Then came Aug. 31.

According to police, Piacenti was walking through Times Square after work when a woman approached her. The woman, later identified as 49-year-old Pamela Cisneros, stabbed Piacenti and another pᴀsserby. The attack happened in the middle of the afternoon near West 42nd Street and Seventh Avenue. Piacenti suffered a fatal abdominal wound and was transported to Bellevue Hospital.

The second victim, 68-year-old Tak Kam, was also wounded but survived. Police arrived and encountered Cisneros with two large knives. Authorities said she moved toward officers, who fired their weapons. Cisneros was subsequently pronounced ᴅᴇᴀᴅ.

Investigators described the initial stabbing as random and unprovoked. The circumstances meant that Piacenti’s dєatᩚh was not connected to a known dispute involving her, her employer or her family. Instead, she happened to be walking through one of Manhattan’s busiest areas at the moment the attack unfolded.

The tᩚraɢedy has drawn attention in part because of how recently Piacenti had returned to work. NBC New York reported that she had just completed her first day back after maternity leave. Other reports described it as her first week back. Regardless of the precise description of the work schedule, the central fact remained the same: she had only recently resumed her professional life after becoming a mother.

Her professional background was extensive for someone still only 32. Piacenti attended the University of Pennsylvania before graduating from Fordham Law School in 2021. She worked at Davis Polk & Wardwell and later joined Bank of America. At the bank, she worked in the business selection and conflicts division and had been with the company for approximately 18 months, according to an internal memo reported by Reuters.

Bank of America publicly mourned her dєatᩚh, describing her as a valued teammate. The company’s Manhattan headquarters is located very close to Times Square, making the circumstances especially immediate for her colleagues. The bank said its security teams were supporting the police investigation and addressing safety concerns involving its offices and employees.

But outside the corporate world, the most personal part of Piacenti’s story was her family. She was the oldest of five siblings. She had met her husband while they were both studying law. They married in 2024 and welcomed their first child the following year. Her family later described a woman who was building a life around her husband and daughter.

After her dєatᩚh, a fundraising effort was launched for Madison. Donations quickly accumulated, eventually approaching $1 million by the time of Piacenti’s funeral. The campaign reflected how strongly strangers, colleagues and acquaintances had responded to the story of an infant suddenly growing up without her mother.

On Sept. 8, mourners gathered for a wake at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mendham Borough. The following day, a funeral Mᴀss was held at the same church. Hundreds came to pay their respects.

For many people following the case, the pH๏τograph of Piacenti with her daughter has become a defining image of what was lost. It was taken during a period that appeared full of optimism: a new baby, a recent anniversary, family travel and the beginning of a return to professional life. Within days, those ordinary plans had been replaced by funeral arrangements, condolences and a fundraising campaign for a child who will grow up knowing her mother largely through the memories of others.
