TRANSFORMING IMPERFECTION INTO ART: ASH SOTO’S JOURNEY WITH VITILIGO

When Ash Soto was twelve years old, a small pale spot appeared on her neck. Soon after, more patches emerged, leading to a diagnosis of vitiligo—a condition where the skin loses its natural pigmentation. As the spots rapidly spread across her body during adolescence, the combination of curious stares and hurtful bullying took a heavy toll on her self-esteem. To avoid questions and hide from judgment, Ash spent years wearing long sleeves and dreading new social interactions.

Her path toward healing began in her late teens through small, intentional steps, such as going outside without covering her arms. The turning point arrived when she decided to pick up a black marker and trace the distinct borders of her patches. Looking closely at her skin, she noticed the unique patterns closely resembled a map. “I never realized how beautiful my vitiligo was until I traced it with a black marker,” she reflected.

This simple act birthed a creative project called Marker Chronicles, which she shared online. Over time, her body art expanded into intricate designs featuring floral arrangements, world maps, and a recreation of Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night with assistance from her cousin. As a Puerto Rican woman, Ash also celebrated her cultural heritage and diversity.

Through art, Ash transformed her skin into a dynamic canvas of self-expression. The very arms she once fought to conceal became a celebrated medium of strength, teaching people everywhere to embrace their unique beauty and practice self-acceptance.
