BIG CAT BACK ON DISPLAY: MIXED EMOTIONS AS YORKSHIRE WILDLIFE PARK REOPENS AFTER WILLIAM CHAPMAN’S TRAGIC dєatᩚh

Visitors have returned to Yorkshire Wildlife Park just six days after 24-year-old William Chapman died following an incident involving an Amur tiger. As guests caught their first glimpse of Altai, questions about the tᩚraɢedy remain under investigation.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park has reopened its gates to visitors following the tragic dєatᩚh of William Chapman, bringing a mixture of sadness, sympathy and difficult questions back to the centre of public attention.

The wildlife attraction in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, welcomed visitors again on Friday, October 16, 2026, after temporarily closing following the incident on October 10.

At the centre of attention was Altai, the five-year-old Amur tiger involved in the incident. The powerful animal, weighing approximately 200 kilograms (440 pounds), remains at the park, where its experienced animal-care team continues to oversee its welfare.

For many visitors, the return was about more than seeing the animals. It was also an opportunity to show support for a place whose staff have been dealing with an extraordinarily difficult week.

The reopening came less than a week after Chapman, 24, died after entering the tiger enclosure.

Early visitors watched Altai from the raised viewing walkway, with some stopping to take photographs as the tiger rested on a wooden platform.

Reactions were mixed. Some visitors expressed sympathy for the staff affected by the incident, while others felt the park needed to resume operations when it was appropriate to do so.

One visitor told reporters that the incident was terrible but that the attraction would eventually need to reopen. Others said they had come to see the animals and support the park.

The atmosphere was markedly different from an ordinary day out. Staff and visitors were returning to a familiar attraction while the circumstances surrounding the tᩚraɢedy remained unresolved.

WHAT HAPPENED TO WILLIAM CHAPMAN?

Chapman died on Saturday, October 10, after entering the enclosure housing Altai at the park’s Land of the Tigers attraction.

An opening hearing of the inquest at Doncaster Coroner’s Court heard that Chapman climbed over two fences before entering the enclosure at approximately 1:30 p.m.

Coroner’s officers said the subsequent encounter with the tiger left him with multiple traumatic injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

His dєatᩚh has devastated his family, who described him as a “bright, warm and engaging young man” whom they dearly loved.

In a statement shared through South Yorkshire Police, the family also asked the public to stop circulating distressing footage and respect their privacy during an exceptionally painful time.

Their tribute stressed that William’s life was about far more than the circumstances of his dєatᩚh.

ALTAl WILL REMAIN AT THE PARK

Following the incident, Yorkshire Wildlife Park confirmed that Altai was safe and would not be euthanised as a result of what happened.

The park said the tiger’s welfare remained a priority for its animal-care team and confirmed that the Land of the Tigers area would reopen alongside the rest of the attraction.

Altai arrived at the park in 2025 as part of an international conservation programme. Amur tigers, also known as Siberian tigers, are among the world’s largest cats.

The park also acknowledged the impact the incident had on its staff, praising their professionalism and confirming that specialist trauma support and ongoing care were being provided to those affected.

Management asked visitors to treat employees with understanding and respect while investigations continued.

Although the park has reopened, several important questions remain unanswered.

At the opening inquest hearing on October 15, the court heard that Chapman had a diagnosis of schizophrenia and had experienced previous periods of psychosis. He had been under the care of adult mєntal health services.

His family had raised concerns about his contact with those services before his dєatᩚh. Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust confirmed that an investigation into his care had been launched.

Separately, City of Doncaster Council is conducting a health and safety investigation into the incident. The council is responsible for licensing the wildlife park and is expected to share relevant findings with the coroner.

The inquest was adjourned until March 18, 2027, allowing further inquiries to take place.

These investigations are expected to help establish the circumstances surrounding Chapman’s dєatᩚh. At this stage, it would be premature to draw conclusions about any possible failings or assign blame.

A RETURN TO NORMALITY — BUT NOT AN END TO THE QUESTIONS

For Yorkshire Wildlife Park, reopening marked an important step towards resuming normal operations. For William Chapman’s family, however, the loss remains deeply personal, and the search for answers continues.

The incident has also prompted wider discussion about visitor safety, animal enclosures and the support available to people experiencing serious mєntal health difficulties.

Those questions deserve careful examination through the official investigations, without speculation or the circulation of distressing material involving the family.

Altai is once again visible to visitors, and the park is welcoming guests back. But the reopening does not bring the story to a close.

As the inquest and other investigations continue, the focus remains on understanding what happened to William Chapman, supporting those affected and establishing the facts behind a tᩚraɢedy that has touched both the local community and the wider public.
