Italian Priest Gives Rioters the Middle Finger — But What He Did for Frightened Tourists Is Drawing Attention

An Italian priest has gone viral after responding to a masked youth with an unexpected gesture during unrest in Milan. But behind the controversial moment is a story about frightened strangers finding shelter inside a church.

Father Giannicola Maria Simone, 65, was outside the Church of Sant’Alessandro di Zebedia in central Milan when a group of young people passed by during street clashes on October 17.

According to Simone, one of the youths showed him the middle finger. The priest responded with the same gesture, and the brief exchange was captured on video that later spread widely across social media.

In an interview with Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Simone confirmed that the footage was genuine and said he had no intention of provoking further violence.

“If I had hit someone, then yes,” he explained when asked whether he regretted his response. He added that he had never raised his hand against anyone.

His actions inside the church, however, revealed another side of the tense scene.

As people fled the unrest, Simone opened the church to tourists and passersby seeking safety. He said they were allowed to remain inside until the chaos outside had subsided.

The priest later spoke with some of the young people involved. He said their explanations for joining the unrest were vague, with some reportedly saying they had followed others who were going to the area.

Simone described the youths as a minority among teenagers but suggested their behavior reflected a broader social problem. He also stressed the importance of understanding young people and helping them find a better path.

The viral gesture has sparked discussion online, with reactions ranging from support to criticism. Yet the story also raises a question that goes beyond a few seconds of video: how should communities respond when public anger turns into violence?

For Simone, the immediate priority was clear. While the streets outside were unsettled, people who needed protection were welcomed inside his church.
