BIG CAT BACK ON DISPLAY: MIXED EMOTIONS AS YORKSHIRE WILDLIFE PARK REOPENS AFTER FATAL TIGER ATTACK

Visitors returned to Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster just six days after 24-year-old William Chapman died inside a tiger enclosure. As guests came to see Altai, the Amur tiger involved in the tᩚraɢedy, grief and unanswered questions continued to hang over the attraction.

DONCASTER, ENGLAND — Yorkshire Wildlife Park reopened its gates on Friday, October 16, welcoming visitors back for the first time since the tragic dєatᩚh of William Chapman, who was fatally injured after entering a tiger enclosure on October 10.

The reopening brought a mixture of emotions. Some visitors wanted to support the park and its staff, while others approached the tiger viewing area with the knowledge that a young man’s life had ended there only days earlier.

For many, the return was not simply another family day out. It was a reminder of the tᩚraɢedy that had shocked the local community and raised difficult questions about safety, mєntal health care and the events leading up to Chapman’s dєatᩚh.

The park confirmed that all areas, including its popular Land of the Tiger attraction, would reopen following discussions with the relevant authorities.

Altai, the male Amur tiger involved in the incident, remained alive and under the care of the park’s experienced animal team.

In an official statement, Yorkshire Wildlife Park reassured the public that the tiger was safe and would not be euthanised because of the incident. The park also emphasised that his ongoing welfare remained a priority.

Visitors returned to the viewing walkways, where additional staff and security personnel were visible around the tiger enclosures.

Some guests expressed sympathy for employees who had witnessed or been affected by the incident. Others said they believed the attraction needed to reopen eventually while continuing to remember the man who had died.

The park, meanwhile, asked visitors to treat its staff with understanding and respect, acknowledging the emotional toll of an exceptionally difficult period.

 WHAT HAPPENED TO WILLIAM CHAPMAN?

An opening inquest hearing at Doncaster Coroner’s Court heard that Chapman, 24, attended the wildlife park on October 10.

According to evidence presented at the hearing, he climbed over two fences and entered the tiger enclosure. The tiger approached him, and the resulting physical encounter caused multiple traumatic injuries. Emergency responders attended, but Chapman died at the scene.

An initial post-mortem examination recorded multiple traumatic injuries as the cause of dєatᩚh.

The hearing also heard that Chapman had a diagnosis of schizophrenia and had experienced previous episodes of psychosis. He had been under the care of adult mєntal health services in Doncaster, and his family had raised concerns about his contact with those services.

His dєatᩚh has therefore prompted questions that extend beyond the immediate circumstances at the park, including whether there were missed opportunities to provide support and whether any additional safeguards could have changed what happened.

Those questions remain matters for the relevant investigations—not conclusions that can be drawn before the evidence has been fully examined.

The reopening does not mean the case is closed.

The City of Doncaster Council, which is responsible for licensing the park, is conducting a health and safety investigation. The findings are expected to be shared with the coroner.

The NHS foundation trust responsible for Chapman’s mєntal health care has also launched an investigation into its contact with him.

Separately, Yorkshire Ambulance Service has said it is investigating a potential incident involving staff accessing or attempting to access medical or incident information without a legitimate reason following the tᩚraɢedy.

A full inquest into Chapman’s dєatᩚh has been adjourned until March 18, 2027, when further evidence can be considered.

Until the investigations are complete, important questions about the circumstances surrounding his dєatᩚh and the systems involved remain unanswered.

 A REOPENING SHADOWED BY LOSS

Yorkshire Wildlife Park has thanked members of the public for the messages of support sent to its team and confirmed that specialist trauma support is being provided to staff affected by the incident.

Yet the return of visitors cannot erase what happened on October 10.

For the people who came through the gates that Friday, the sight of Altai was inseparable from the memory of William Chapman—a young man whose dєatᩚh has left his loved ones facing an unimaginable loss.

As the park resumes operations, the focus now rests on allowing the investigations to proceed, supporting those affected and establishing the facts surrounding the tᩚraɢedy.

The gates may be open again, but the questions surrounding William Chapman’s dєatᩚh remain.
