“I JUST KEEP GETTING PULLED BACK” — MATT BAKER’S HEARTFELT REASON FOR BUILDING A NEW HOME NEAR HIS AGEING PARENTS
As their children grow more independent, Matt Baker and wife Nicola are embarking on a long-awaited renovation project — but the real meaning behind it goes far beyond bricks and mortar.
For television presenter Matt Baker, home has always meant more than just a place to live. It is where his story began, where his family built their lives and where he continues to feel a deep connection to the people who raised him.
Now, the Countryfile star is beginning a new chapter with his wife, Nicola, as the couple transform an old barn, stable and granary on his parents’ farm in the Durham Dales into a home of their own.
Their renovation project features in Channel 4’s Matt Baker: Our Barn in the Dales, which follows the couple as they take on the challenge of turning the old buildings into a family cottage.
But behind the building work lies a more personal motivation: staying close to Matt’s parents, Mike and Janice, and helping make life on their much-loved farm easier as they grow older.
A DREAM NEARLY 20 YEARS IN THE MAKING
The idea of converting the old buildings has been in the family’s plans for almost two decades. Matt explained that the barns had been part of his life for as long as he could remember, and that he and Nicola had long hoped to turn them into a home.
With their children, Luke and Molly, becoming more independent, the couple now have an opportunity to focus on this long-held dream.
For Matt, returning to the farm is about reconnecting with his roots. The property was where he grew up, learned practical skills and developed the lasting bond with rural life that viewers have come to recognise through his television work.
The renovation is also a major undertaking, requiring the couple to clear old buildings, rebuild sections of the structure and navigate the unpredictable demands of farm life.
WHY BEING CLOSE TO HIS PARENTS MATTERS
The project has an especially meaningful purpose because Matt’s parents continue to live on the farm.
His father, Mike, is 82 and has recently experienced falls. In the programme, Matt and Nicola work on practical improvements designed to make the property safer and more accessible, including creating a new path to the farmhouse.
These changes may appear small compared with the scale of the renovation, but they reflect something deeply important: helping loved ones maintain their independence while making everyday life a little easier.
The Baker family’s connection to the farm has already been tested by difficult moments. In 2020, Matt returned with his family to help after his mother, Janice, suffered a serious accident that affected her mobility. The experience inspired the earlier series Our Farm in the Dales, which followed the family as they worked to secure the future of the farm.
Now, the latest project continues that story — with a new home and another stage of family life ahead.
MORE THAN A RENOVATION
Matt has spoken openly about how much the farm means to him. Despite travelling widely throughout his career, he has described feeling continually drawn back to the place where he grew up.
That attachment helps explain why the barn conversion is about much more than creating a beautiful cottage.
It is about preserving a family connection, sharing responsibilities across generations and making sure his parents can continue enjoying the place they love.
For Nicola and Matt, the project also represents a change in pace as their children grow older and begin building lives of their own. The couple are creating a home for their future while remaining close to their family’s past.
The work will take time, patience and plenty of effort. But every repaired wall and every improvement around the farm carries a purpose that cannot be measured in money or property value.
Sometimes, the most meaningful homecoming is not about moving back to a place. It is about being there for the people who made it home in the first place.
