“WE’VE REACHED THE END OF RUBY’S ROAD” — FARMER ROB’S HEARTBREAKING FAREWELL TO A HORSE WHO TOUCHED THOUSANDS OF HEARTS

After weeks of uncertainty and a desperate effort to save her, Cannon Hall Farm’s beloved Shire mare Ruby has become part of a story filled with hope, heartbreak and the difficult decisions that come with loving an animal.

For Farmer Rob Nicholson and the team at Cannon Hall Farm in South Yorkshire, saying goodbye to Ruby was a moment no animal lover ever wants to face.

Ruby was not just a beautiful Shire horse. She was a familiar face to the farm’s followers, an animal cared for by a devoted team, and a mare whose medical struggles prompted an outpouring of concern from people hoping she would recover.

But despite the efforts made to help her, Ruby’s story ended in heartbreak.

A MEDICAL EMERGENCY THAT BROUGHT FEAR AND HOPE

Ruby’s troubles began in May 2026, shortly after she gave birth to a foal on May 4.

The following day, she developed colic, a condition associated with abdominal pain that can become life-threatening in horses. She was rushed to Rainbow Equine Hospital in Malton for specialist treatment and emergency surgery.

Farmer Rob later spoke about the frightening uncertainty surrounding her condition, admitting that he had feared the worst while waiting for news from the veterinary team.

For a time, there were encouraging signs, giving everyone reason to hope that Ruby might pull through.

People who followed Cannon Hall Farm online watched for updates, hoping each new message would bring better news.

Sadly, Ruby’s recovery did not last.

By July, her condition had deteriorated significantly. After assessing her, the farm’s equine vet, Marco, advised that her quality of life had reached a point where saying goodbye was the kindest option.

Rob shared the devastating news with followers, expressing how difficult it was to accept that Ruby’s journey had reached its end.

The decision was heartbreaking, but Ruby’s welfare had to come first. Continuing treatment simply because everyone wanted her to survive could not take priority over her comfort and quality of life.

For the people who had fought so hard to help her, letting her go was an act of care, even though it brought immense sadness.

Ruby’s story touched people far beyond Cannon Hall Farm.

Many followers had never met her in person, yet they had become invested in her journey through the farm’s updates. They had shared the uncertainty of her illness, celebrated signs of improvement and hoped she would return to the farm.

For Rob and the team, however, the connection was much more personal. They had watched over Ruby, worried about her health and worked alongside veterinary professionals to give her the best possible chance.

Her story offered a glimpse into the emotional side of caring for animals: the joy of welcoming new life, the fear of a medical emergency and the painful reality that even dedicated care cannot always change the outcome.

A DIFFICULT TIME FOR CANNON HALL FARM’S SHIRE HORSES

Ruby’s loss was part of an especially difficult period for the farm’s Shire horses. Cannon Hall Farm also confirmed the heartbreaking loss of Ruby’s foal, Iris, during 2026.

In September, the farm announced a special online event with equine vet Marco to reflect on the challenges the team had faced, the efforts made to save Ruby and Iris, and the difficult veterinary decisions that followed.

The event also looked ahead to more hopeful developments among the farm’s other Shire horses.

The breed has a long history in Britain, and Cannon Hall Farm continues to support its future through its Shire horse programme. The losses were therefore painful not only for the people who cared for the horses, but also for those who follow the farm’s work with this increasingly rare breed.

RUBY WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN 🕊️

Ruby’s journey brought moments of hope, fear and deep sadness. Her story reminded thousands of people that behind every animal update are real relationships and people doing everything they can to provide care.

For Farmer Rob and the Cannon Hall Farm team, Ruby will remain a much-loved animal whose life mattered deeply.

Sometimes, the hardest goodbye comes when there is nothing more that can be done. And sometimes, the greatest act of love is putting an animal’s wellbeing ahead of our own wish to keep them here.

Rest peacefully, beautiful Ruby. Your story touched many hearts, and you will not be forgotten. ❤️
