BIG CAT BACK ON DISPLAY: YORKSHIRE WILDLIFE PARK REOPENS AFTER FATAL TIGER ATTACK AS VISITORS RETURN WITH HEAVY HEARTS

DONCASTER, ENGLAND — Visitors returned to Yorkshire Wildlife Park on Friday, October 16, following the tragic dєatᩚh of 24-year-old William Chapman, who was fatally injured after entering an Amur tiger enclosure at the popular wildlife attraction.

The park had been closed since the incident on Saturday, October 10. Its reopening brought a mixture of emotions, as visitors came to see the animals while remembering the young man who lost his life. Some expressed sympathy for the park’s staff, who have been dealing with the aftermath of the tᩚraɢedy.

An inquest opening at Doncaster Coroner’s Court heard that Chapman climbed over two fences and entered the tiger enclosure at around 1:30 p.m.

The court was told that he was approached by the tiger, named Altai, and suffered multiple traumatic injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The hearing also heard that Chapman had a history of mєntal illness and had previously been diagnosed with schizophrenia. His family had raised concerns about his contact with mєntal health services, and the relevant NHS trust has launched an investigation into his care.

 ALTAI REMAINS AT THE PARK

The five-year-old Amur tiger involved in the incident remains at Yorkshire Wildlife Park.

In an official statement, the park confirmed that Altai was safe and well and would not be euthanised as a result of the incident. The park also said his continued welfare remained a priority for its animal-care team.

When the attraction reopened, visitors were able to return to the Land of the Tigers area. Some paused to watch the animals, while others reflected on the tᩚraɢedy and the people affected by it.

The reopening does not mean the investigations are over.

South Yorkshire Police continue to make enquiries into the circumstances surrounding Chapman’s dєatᩚh. City of Doncaster Council is also conducting a health and safety investigation, while the NHS trust’s separate review is examining concerns about his mєntal health care.

Senior Coroner Nicola Mundy adjourned the inquest until March 18, 2027, when further proceedings are scheduled.

 A COMMUNITY LEFT TO REFLECT

Yorkshire Wildlife Park has asked visitors to treat its staff with understanding and respect, acknowledging the difficult circumstances they have faced. The park said it was providing specialist trauma support and ongoing care for those affected.

As visitors return and the investigation continues, the tᩚraɢedy remains a reminder of the importance of protecting human safety, supporting those experiencing mєntal health difficulties and treating everyone affected by a sudden dєatᩚh with compassion.

William Chapman’s dєatᩚh has left a family grieving and a community searching for answers. For now, those answers will depend on the investigations and the forthcoming inquest.
