A family holiday in the Italian mountains has ended in heartbreak after a 36-year-old American woman fell to her dєatᩚh while hiking in the spectacular Dolomites.
Michelle Alejandra Rubio Leiva, who was from the Miami, Florida, area, died on October 17, 2026, after plunging approximately 300 metres (nearly 1,000 feet) in the Forcella Pordoi area above Canazei, northern Italy.
She had been enjoying a trip with relatives when tᩚraɢedy struck at an exposed section of the mountainside, at an altitude of around 2,750 metres.
According to media reports, Michelle had reportedly moved away from the designated trail to reach a panoramic viewpoint for a photograph when she lost her footing.
Her family members were nearby, and her sister raised the alarm as emergency crews rushed to the scene.
DESPERATE RESCUE MISSION
The emergency call came shortly before midday, prompting the Trentino Alpine and Speleological Rescue Service to dispatch specialist rescuers and an air ambulance.
A mountain rescuer who was already in the area helped guide the helicopter team to the precise location where Michelle had fallen.
Medical personnel were flown to the mountainside and reached her at approximately 12:30 p.m. Tragically, a doctor could only confirm that she had died.
The recovery operation was extremely challenging because of the steep, exposed terrain.
Michelle’s relatives were flown to the nearby town of Canazei while rescuers worked to recover her body. The operation continued for several hours before her remains were transported from the mountain.
For the family, what had begun as a holiday surrounded by Italy’s extraordinary scenery had become a devastating loss.
