JUST HOURS AFTER PLAYING THE GAME HE LOVED, 16-YEAR-OLD DEEJAY TUIASOSOPO LOST HIS LIFE IN A TRAGIC 𝔠r𝘢sh
He was only 16, with dreams of becoming a state champion and an entire future still ahead of him. Now, his family, teammates and community are mourning a young football player whose life was cut tragically short.
A Washington high school football community is grieving the loss of Deejay Tuiasosopo, a 16-year-old athlete who was killed Friday night after being struck by a vehicle in a 𝔠r𝘢sh involving an alleged impaired driver.
Deejay had played football for Federal Way High School earlier that evening. Hours later, the young athlete was gone.
According to reports, Deejay was standing on a sidewalk near an intersection when a vehicle collided with another car and struck him. The 𝔠r𝘢sh happened close to the area where he had played football earlier that night.
Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene.
A 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide. Authorities allege that he was under the influence at the time of the collision. The investigation is ongoing, and additional details about the circumstances of the 𝔠r𝘢sh have not been publicly disclosed.
A YOUNG ATHLETE WITH BIG DREAMS
Deejay was in his first season with the Federal Way High School football team, playing as a running back and linebacker while wearing jersey No. 56.
He was expected to graduate in 2028 and dreamed of becoming a state champion.
For a teenager still discovering his potential, those ambitions represented the beginning of what could have been an exciting journey. He had more games to play, more goals to pursue and so many opportunities still ahead.
His sudden dєatᩚh has left teammates and friends struggling to understand how someone so young, with so much to look forward to, could be taken away so unexpectedly.
Teammate David Rodriguez spoke about the dreams Deejay had been working toward.
“The fact he can’t do that, that’s just, it just feels sad,” Rodriguez said.
His words reflect the heartbreak felt by those who knew Deejay and understood how much his future meant to him.
A FAMILY WITH A LEGACY IN SPORTS
Deejay belonged to a family with deep roots in professional and collegiate athletics.
His great-uncle, Manu Tuiasosopo, was selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the first round of the 1979 NFL Draft. He later played for the San Francisco 49ers and was part of the team that won Super Bowl XIX in January 1985.
Manu’s son, Marques Tuiasosopo, became a standout quarterback at the University of Washington. He was named Most Valuable Player of the 2001 Rose Bowl after leading the Huskies to victory and later played in the NFL for the Oakland Raiders and New York Jets.
Other members of the family also pursued careers in sports. Zach Tuiasosopo spent time on NFL practice squads, Leslie Tuiasosopo became head coach of the University of Washington women’s volleyball team, and Matt Tuiasosopo played professional baseball in Major League Baseball.
Although Deejay was part of a family known for its athletic achievements, he was building a path of his own — one shaped by his dedication to football and his dream of winning a state championship.
Tragically, he will never get the chance to see how far that journey might have taken him.
FLOWERS AND TRIBUTES TO JERSEY NO. 56
On Saturday, family members, friends, teammates and community members gathered for a vigil near the intersection where Deejay died.
Flowers and balloons were left at the scene as people came together to honor his memory and support those grieving his loss.
Among the tributes were displays featuring the numbers five and six, a touching reference to the No. 56 jersey Deejay wore on the football field.
Two of his uncles, who spoke to KOMO, said they were left numb by the tᩚraɢedy.
The vigil became a place for loved ones to share their grief and remember a teenager whose life had touched so many people.
For his teammates, the loss is especially painful. The person they had played alongside just hours earlier was no longer there — and the dreams they had watched him pursue would remain unfinished.
GONE TOO SOON, NEVER FORGOTTEN
At just 16 years old, Deejay had so much left to experience. He had a graduation to look forward to, football seasons still ahead and a dream of becoming a state champion.
Instead, his family and community are left with memories, unanswered questions and the painful reality of a future that will never unfold as they imagined.
As the investigation continues, those who knew Deejay are holding on to the memories of the young athlete behind jersey No. 56.
He was more than a football player. He was a son, a nephew, a teammate and a young man with dreams worth chasing.
His life was tragically short, but the love surrounding him and the tributes left in his honor show how deeply he mattered.
🕊️ **Rest in peace, Deejay Tuiasosopo. May your family find strength in the days ahead, and may your memory live
