Hundreds of police officers and members of the public gathered in Hartlepool on September 9 for the funeral of PC Matthew Blades, 37, the Cleveland Police officer killed in the devastating A66 collision.

The streets around St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church fell into silence as a procession of officers from forces across the UK stood shoulder-to-shoulder to honor a colleague remembered not simply as a police officer, but as a husband, father and community figure. Standard bearers represented police forces from across Britain, while fellow officers openly wiped away tears as Blades’ Union Flag-draped coffin was carried into the packed church.

Blades was killed alongside fellow officer PC Tom Clough, 38, when their marked patrol vehicle was struck head-on by a Volkswagen Pᴀssat travelling the wrong way on the A66 on August 22. Five occupants of the Pᴀssat also died, bringing the total dєatᩚh toll to seven.

But Wednesday’s farewell was about more than the circumstances of that horrific night.

Blades was remembered as a devoted father of two and an armed-response officer who had also recently taken on a youth football coaching role at Seaton Carew FC. His wife described him as her “beloved husband” and “best friend,” while remembering him as a devoted father whose children would grow up knowing what an extraordinary man he was.

The emotional scenes carried an unmistakable message: behind the uniform was a family facing a future without a husband and father—and colleagues mourning someone who had shared the risks of policing with them every day.

Four mounted officers stood guard as the cortege arrived. Bagpipes and drums accompanied the procession, with “Amazing Grace” played as the coffin entered the church. Crowds lowered their heads in silence, while officers stood visibly overcome with emotion.

The tᩚraɢedy has also left Cleveland Police confronting a much wider crisis. The A66 deaths have been followed by unrest, arrests and concerns about organized crime in the Middlesbrough area, prompting the deployment of around 200 specialist officers from other northern forces.

Yet amid all the headlines, the funeral brought the focus back to one person.

Matthew Blades was not a statistic in an A66 investigation. He was a father who will never watch his children grow up, a husband whose absence cannot be replaced, and a police officer whose final duty became a tᩚraɢedy that shook an entire community.

As Britain watched officers line the streets with heads bowed, the farewell carried a simple message: his service will be remembered, but his family will have to live with the loss long after the crowds have gone home.
