MIRACLE XIA XIA: A STORY OF BRAVERY, HOPE, AND RESILIENCE
On her social media profile, Xia Shiwei listed her age as one hundred, even though she was only twenty-three years old when her story gained widespread attention. The number was not a mistype; it represented her deepest wish for a long and full life. Known online as “Miracle Xia Xia,” the brave young woman from China’s Anhui province was diagnosed with bone cancer after collapsing during her college entrance exams in 2021. The following year, she underwent a life-altering surgery that resulted in the amputation of her right leg.

Faced with severe health challenges, Xia also suffered heartbreaking personal losses. Her father cut off contact after her diagnosis, and her mother withdrew after the surgery. Left to navigate ᑕriᩚtiᩚcal medical choices alone, nineteen-year-old Xia began signing her own surgical consent forms with trembling hands. Despite these overwhelming hurdles, she remained determined to pursue her education and independence. She enrolled at Hefei Normal University and worked tirelessly to support herself by writing online and selling handmade crochet items on the street.

To document her journey and raise funds, Xia shared her daily life on Douyin, building a community of over 460,000 followers by early 2026. The financial support from her followers covered nearly ninety percent of her medical bills. Even as the cancer spread to her lungs, Xia maintained a hopeful spirit, asking supporters to call her “Princess” and holding fast to her dream of reaching age one hundred. Her story highlights the profound impact of community support for individuals enduring long-term medical battles.
