He Told His Sons They Were the Best Boys Ever — Then an Ordinary Ohio Afternoon Ended Three Childhoods

On June 15, 2023, nothing about the first half of the day in Monroe Township, Ohio, looked like the last day of three little boys’ lives. Chad Doerman came home from work earlier than usual, ate lunch his wife Laura had made, and sat in a house that relatives later described as loud with baseball, go-karts, fishing stories, and the ordinary chaos of brothers who were seven, four, and three. Clayton, Hunter, and Chase Doerman had spent the previous days doing what children do when a father is still playing the part of a father. There had been a “boys day” at a dirt track.

There had been fishing. The night before, Chad had coached third base at Clayton’s baseball game. Friends and family would later say he had been, by outward measure, a present dad. That is why the hours that followed still read like a story people refuse to believe even after a guilty plea, a life sentence, and years of court records. Prosecutors later laid out a sequence that was almost unbearable in its calm. Around lunchtime, Doerman called his own father and said, cryptically, that “Clayton is going to be the hardest one.” At the table he told Laura, “This will be my last good meal,” a line she took as a possible sign he might harm himself, not the children. In the mid-afternoon he walked the house with a Bible, reading to Hunter and repeating, “Chad knows what’s right. Chad knows what’s right.” When he opened the gun safe around 4 p.m. and Laura said he was scaring her, he answered that he was “just playing around.”

He gathered the family toward a nap in the master bedroom. He told the boys he loved them, that they had done nothing wrong, and that they were “the best boys ever.” Then the performance of fatherhood collapsed. What happened next was not a sudden argument or a drunken accident. Prosecutors described a planned, methodical attack inside the home the boys had been born into. Laura thought at first that her husband was about to 𝘬iᩚll himself. She and the children begged him not to. She reached for a phone to call for help for him. He threw the phone across the room and told her it was too late. Hunter was sH๏τ first. Laura screamed for the other boys to run. Fourteen-year-old stepdaughter Alexis, who had been watching television, saw enough to understand that the person they trusted most had become the danger. One child fled toward a field and was pursued.

Laura tried to shield the youngest and even grabbed at the rifle; she was wounded in the hand. By the time deputies arrived shortly after 4:15 p.m., Clayton, Hunter, and Chase were ᴅᴇᴀᴅ outside the house. Doerman was found sitting on the stoop. The contrast is what made the case travel around the world: a father speaking love in one breath and ending three lives in the next. In August 2024 he pleaded guilty to three counts of aggravated murder and two counts of felonious ᴀssault and was sentenced to three consecutive life terms without parole plus additional years for the ᴀssaults on Laura and Alexis. Laura later asked the public to remember the boys as children who loved fishing, swimming, go-carting, and baseball fields, not only as victims of the last hour of their father’s choosing. The sentence closed the criminal case. It did not explain how a man could look at three sons, call them the best boys ever, and still decide that the afternoon would be their last.
