Teacher and 10-Year-Old Boy Drowned on Iowa School Trip — New Investigation Raises Questions About Student Supervision

Teacher and 10-Year-Old Boy Drowned on Iowa School Trip — New Investigation Raises Questions About Student Supervision

A 10-year-old boy and his 24-year-old teacher died in a heartbreaking drowning incident during a school field trip in Iowa. Now, newly reported findings have raised questions about whether enough adults were supervising the group of children.

Ahmed Osman, a fifth-grade student at Borlaug Elementary School in Iowa City, and his teacher, Hannah Jorgensen, died on September 22, 2026, at the Macbride Nature Recreation Area near Lake Macbride State Park.

According to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, Jorgensen had led 14 students on a woodland hike before the group stopped for lunch near the Coralville Reservoir, south of the Lake Macbride spillway.

During the break, Ahmed stepped into water flowing down the spillway. He slipped on the rocks and fell into the reservoir.

Jorgensen immediately jumped into the water in an attempt to save him. Before entering the reservoir, she left her phone on shore and instructed the children to call 911. One student used her phone to contact emergency services, while other children alerted a nearby bystander.

The bystander also entered the water in an attempt to rescue the teacher and student but was unable to reach them. He managed to return safely to shore and remained with the children until authorities arrived.

Jorgensen was recovered from the water on September 22 and pronounced dead at the scene. Ahmed remained missing overnight before search teams recovered his body the following afternoon.

New questions about supervision

A report published by KCRG on October 26 raised concerns about the number of students Jorgensen was supervising alone. The station’s investigation found that University of Iowa School of the Wild program guidelines called for one adult for every 10 students aged 9 to 14 on day trips.

Jorgensen had been supervising 14 children without another adult, according to the report.

KCRG said it contacted the University of Iowa and the Iowa City Community School District for comment but had not received responses at the time of publication. The finding raises questions about how the trip was organized, although it does not by itself establish what caused the drownings or whether a violation contributed to the deaths.

A community left grieving

The deaths devastated the school community, with the district expressing condolences to both families and making counselors available to students and staff. School of the Wild field trips were suspended following the tᩚraɢedy.

Ahmed’s father, Mohamed Osman, spoke of his profound grief, saying the family had never imagined losing their son so young. He said Ahmed had dreams for his future, including becoming a doctor or a soccer player.

Jorgensen’s family and colleagues have also mourned a young teacher whose attempt to rescue her student ended in tᩚraɢedy.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office said the incident remained under investigation in its latest update. The newly reported supervision concerns add another dimension to the tᩚraɢedy, as families and the community seek to understand how the field trip unfolded and whether additional safeguards could have made a difference.
