Arrest Made in Case of Ohio Teen Who Died After Online Predator Allegedly Blackmailed Him

A man in his early 20s has been arrested in Ivory Coast in connection with the dєatᩚh of a 17-year-old Ohio student who died by sᩚuᩚiᩚcide after being targeted in an online sextortion scheme.

James Woods, a high school student and track athlete from Streetsboro, Ohio, died on November 19, 2022, after an online predator allegedly tricked him into sharing intimate photographs and then threatened to expose them unless he paid thousands of dollars.

The arrest was announced by James’ mother, Tamia Woods, at a foundation gala held in his honor on October 24, 2026, according to local reports. The case had remained under investigation for nearly four years.

Investigators said James believed he was communicating with a 19-year-old woman who had contacted him through Instagram. After he shared compromising images, the person allegedly began demanding money and threatening to distribute the photographs.

The messages left the teenager frightened and under intense pressure. When police later examined his phone, they discovered evidence of the blackmail, leading investigators to identify online sextortion as a factor in his dєatᩚh.

Streetsboro police worked with the Internet Crimes Against Children task force and federal authorities to trace the suspect. Investigators reportedly followed digital evidence, including an IP address, before coordinating with law enforcement in Ivory Coast.

The suspect is now in custody and faces charges connected to the alleged sextortion scheme. Authorities said the case is expected to proceed to trial, where he could face more than 10 years in prison if convicted.

For James’ family, the arrest represents a significant development after years of grief and efforts to hold the person responsible accountable. His mother has since worked to raise awareness of online exploitation and help other families recognize the warning signs.

Sextortion occurs when someone threatens to release intimate images or other 𝘴єn𝘴iᩚtiᩚvє information unless a victim sends money, additional images or complies with other demands. Law enforcement agencies warn that perpetrators frequently impersonate young people online to gain the trust of teenagers.

Authorities urge young people who receive such threats to avoid paying the blackmailer, preserve messages and report the incident to a trusted adult or law enforcement officer. Victims should remember that they are being targeted by a crime and do not have to face the situation alone.

The arrest marks a major step in the investigation, although the allegations against the suspect must still be established in court.
