NICK KNOWLES EMOTIONAL AS DIY SOS FACES A MAJOR CHANGE AFTER 26 YEARS — BBC PLANS NEW SPIN-OFF

The longtime presenter says the programme will not return in its familiar format, raising questions about the future of one of Britain’s best-known home renovation shows.

Nick Knowles speaks out as fans react

Nick Knowles has shared an emotional message about the future of DIY SOS, admitting he is disappointed that the long-running BBC programme will not return next year in the format viewers have come to know and love.

The presenter, who has fronted the show since it began in 1999, described the decision as “the end of an era” while thanking the thousands of tradespeople, suppliers and volunteers who have helped transform homes and support families over more than two decades.

The BBC announced on October 17 that DIY SOS would be “rested” in 2027 as the corporation faces financial pressures and works to reduce spending. Rather than confirming a permanent cancellation, the broadcaster said it would commission a new spin-off programme.

In a statement shared on social media, Knowles acknowledged the difficult circumstances behind the decision.

He said he was disappointed not to be filming the show next year in its familiar format, but understood that the BBC could not spend without limits and sometimes had to make difficult choices.

Since its debut in 1999, DIY SOS has evolved from a programme helping homeowners with renovation problems into a large-scale community project series.

Knowles and his team have worked with local builders, suppliers and volunteers to transform homes for families dealing with serious illness, disability, bereavement and other difficult circumstances.

Some projects have extended far beyond individual homes. In 2015, the team worked with hundreds of volunteers on a project to create housing for military veterans in Manchester. In 2018, the programme helped rebuild a community centre and restore a boxing club affected by the Grenfell Tower fire.

The scale of these projects has become central to the programme’s identity — and a major factor in the uncertainty surrounding its future.

The BBC said the decision was made in light of its “savings challenges”. The corporation is pursuing a plan to save £500 million over three years, with several other established entertainment programmes also affected by cuts.

A new spin-off is planned

Instead of producing the original programme in 2027, the BBC plans to introduce DIY SOS: Rebuilt My Life, a spin-off made by production company South Shore.

According to the broadcaster, the new programme will revisit successful projects and families featured in previous episodes, allowing the DIY SOS brand to continue in a more cost-effective form.

However, Knowles has since explained that he was told any future version would be smaller and would not feature the same kind of large-scale house renovations, hospices and charity builds that defined the original series.

He questioned whether the programme’s most ambitious projects could be recreated on a reduced scale, saying the work depended on the collective effort of thousands of people.

The distinction has left fans wondering whether the spin-off can preserve the spirit of the original show.

The announcement prompted a strong response from viewers who praised the programme for showcasing generosity, community spirit and practical help for families in need.

A petition calling for the original format to be saved reportedly attracted more than 40,000 signatures.

Many supporters have argued that the show offers something different from conventional reality television: its stories centre on people facing difficult circumstances and the volunteers who give their time, skills and materials to help them.

Knowles also focused on those contributions in his message, describing the volunteers and tradespeople as hardworking people who repeatedly came together to build stronger communities.

He thanked the families who had shared their experiences, as well as the production team, suppliers, volunteers and viewers who supported the programme over the years.

Is DIY SOS being cancelled permanently?

For now, the BBC’s official position is that DIY SOS will be rested in 2027, not formally declared permanently cancelled. The planned spin-off is intended to keep the brand on screen, although its format will differ from the original.

Knowles’s comments have nevertheless made clear that viewers should not expect the familiar large-scale builds to return unchanged in the near future.

After 26 years of working with families and communities, the presenter said the experience had been an extraordinary privilege — and that nothing else would quite compare with DIY SOS.

Whether the new spin-off can carry the programme’s legacy forward remains to be seen. For its loyal audience, the change marks the end of a familiar chapter in British television.
