He Lost His Job After Helping a Homeless Teenager — Then Watched Him Graduate as His Son

After 31 years in education, Rob Burnside faced a decision that would change his life: walk away from a struggling teenager or risk everything to help him.

As principal of Lakota East High School in Ohio, Burnside learned that 16-year-old Landerius “DeDe” Hayes was experiencing homelessness. The teenager sometimes slept in a car and struggled to find enough food.

For Burnside, turning away was never an option.

A Teenager Who Needed Someone to Believe in Him

When DeDe was withdrawn from school following a change in residency, Burnside continued helping him despite facing disciplinary action from the school district.

His concern extended beyond the classroom. Alongside his wife, Angel, Burnside eventually welcomed DeDe into their home.

What began as an act of compassion grew into a lasting family commitment. The couple eventually became DeDe’s legal guardians, giving the teenager a more stable foundation as he worked toward his future.

But the decision came at a significant professional cost.

Burnside lost his position as principal. Yet he has said he has no regrets about helping the young man.

For him, the consequences of standing by DeDe did not outweigh the importance of being there when the teenager needed support.

From Homelessness to High School Graduation

In May 2026, Burnside witnessed one of the most meaningful moments of their journey together: DeDe’s high school graduation.

After the uncertainty and hardship that had marked the teenager’s life, reaching graduation represented an important milestone.

And for Burnside, the moment carried a different meaning than it would have before.

He was no longer watching DeDe cross the stage as his school principal. He was watching as the father figure who had opened his home and stood beside him through a difficult chapter of his life.

The graduation marked more than the end of high school. It reflected the difference that stability, encouragement and a dependable adult can make in a young person’s life.

The Price of Doing What He Believed Was Right

Burnside’s story raises an important question about the boundaries between professional responsibility and personal compassion.

School administrators must follow district policies, including rules governing student residency and enrollment. At the same time, vulnerable students can face circumstances that extend far beyond school walls.

In DeDe’s case, Burnside chose to remain involved even when that decision carried consequences for his career.

His actions do not erase the complexity of school policies. But they highlight a reality that educators often encounter: sometimes, a student’s greatest need is not simply academic support, but a safe place and someone willing to stand by them.

For DeDe, Burnside and his wife became that source of support.

A Legacy Beyond the Classroom

A career spanning 31 years could be measured through professional achievements, students taught and lives influenced.

But Burnside’s story offers another way to measure a legacy.

In May 2026, he stood beside a young man who had faced homelessness as a teenager and reached graduation with a family standing behind him.

The decision cost Burnside his principal position, but it also helped create a bond that extended far beyond the school year.

Sometimes, the most important lesson an educator teaches is not found in a textbook or delivered from behind a desk.

It is the lesson that a young person’s circumstances do not define their worth—and that someone can still choose to believe in them when life becomes difficult.

Rob Burnside may have lost his job, but his story is a reminder that one act of compassion can change the course of a young person’s life.
