At Least 64 Dead After Two High-Speed Trains Collide in Spain, With Hundreds on Board

A devastating train collision in central Spain has killed at least 64 people and injured dozens more after two high-speed passenger trains collided on a route connecting Madrid and Seville.
The 𝔠r𝘢sh occurred on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, near Urda in the province of Toledo. Both trains were carrying hundreds of passengers, with reports indicating that more than 500 people were aboard the two services combined.
According to regional authorities, one train struck the rear of another that had stopped, causing two carriages to derail. The impact left twisted metal and wreckage scattered down an embankment, while several train cars were left overturned or severely damaged.
The trains involved were operated by Spain’s state-owned Renfe and private rail company Iryo. Reports indicated that the Iryo service was carrying approximately 147 passengers, including a baby, while the Renfe train had around 397 passengers on board.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene, deploying firefighters, police officers, ambulances and medical helicopters. Injured passengers were transported to nearby hospitals, while emergency facilities were established to assist survivors and provide support to those affected.
Authorities warned that the dєatᩚh toll could rise as rescue workers continued searching the wreckage and assessing the full extent of the disaster. At least 80 people were reported injured, with some suffering serious injuries.
Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his shock over the tᩚraɢedy and said emergency services were working to assist victims and their families. He also canceled his scheduled engagements to focus on the response.
The collision forced the suspension of high-speed rail services between Madrid and parts of southern Spain, disrupting travel along a major transportation corridor.

Investigators have not yet established the cause of the 𝔠r𝘢sh. Officials are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the collision, including why one train had stopped and how the second train came to strike it.
The disaster has sent shockwaves through Spain, coming after another diᩚadℓy rail accident earlier in the year. Families are now waiting for information about missing loved ones as emergency crews continue their work at the scene.
