Lindsay Clancy Murder Trial Enters Final Phase as Experts Clash Over Criminal Responsibility

The closely watched murder trial of Lindsay Clancy is approaching its conclusion in Plymouth Superior Court in Mᴀssachusetts. As of late August 2026, prosecutors have presented their final reʙuттal witnesses, and the judge has indicated that the presentation of evidence is nearly finished, with closing arguments expected shortly afterward.

Clancy, now 36, faces three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of her children — Cora, age 5; Dawson, age 3; and Callan, 8 months — which occurred at the family’s home in Duxbury in January 2023. She does not dispute that she caused their deaths. The central issue for the jury is whether she can be held criminally responsible. Prosecutors argue that her actions were deliberate and planned. The defense maintains that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and lacked the ability to understand the wrongfulness of what she was doing.

On August 25, the prosecution called forensic psychologist Kirk Heilbrun, who testified that Clancy was “criminally responsible” and demonstrated moral awareness of her actions. The previous day, Heilbrun’s reference to Clancy’s Catholic faith during testimony prompted defense attorney Kevin Reddington to request a mistrial. Judge William Sullivan denied the motion but instructed the jury to disregard those comments and criticized the introduction of the topic.

Heilbrun and Reddington engaged in several tense exchanges. The defense pressed the psychologist on diagnostic standards, the time frame for postpartum conditions, and his overall ᴀssessment. Reddington challenged both Heilbrun’s qualifications and the weight of his conclusions.

Prosecutors then called forensic psychiatrist Dr. Gregory Saathoff, who has affiliations with the University of Virginia and experience consulting with the FBI. Saathoff focused on what he described as inconsistencies in Clancy’s account of events and the unusual characteristics of the auditory experiences she reported. He noted that she described hearing a directing voice only on the day of the killings, with that experience ending once the acts were complete — a pattern he said was atypical based on his clinical experience. He also highlighted sequential decision-making in the events and differences between Clancy’s recollection and statements provided by her then-husband.

Saathoff testified that any compensation for his work went through his university department rather than directly to him. He has previously treated a limited number of women in similar situations.

Court adjourned on August 25 with Judge Sullivan telling the jury that the evidence phase was expected to wrap up the following day. He indicated that closing arguments would likely follow the day after that, and that jury deliberations were not expected to begin until later in the week. The judge reminded jurors that they still needed to hear the full closings and the legal instructions before reaching any conclusions.

Clancy has not testified. Her parents have attended much of the trial. The case has attracted significant national attention, focusing public discussion on postpartum mєntal health, the reliability of competing expert opinions, and the legal threshold for criminal responsibility in such cases.

As of August 26, 2026, the trial remains in its final evidentiary stage, with the jury expected to hear closing arguments imminently and then begin deliberations.
