INQUEST INTO WILLIAM CHAPMAN’S dєatᩚh REOPENS QUESTIONS OVER mєntal HEALTH CARE BEFORE TIGER tᩚraɢedy

The family of William Chapman, 24, has raised concerns about his contact with mєntal health services before his dєatᩚh at Yorkshire Wildlife Park. As investigations continue, his loved ones hope the inquest will help explain the circumstances surrounding the tᩚraɢedy.

The ongoing investigation into the dєatᩚh of William Chapman has brought renewed attention to questions about the mєntal health care he received in the months and years before his life ended at a wildlife park in South Yorkshire.

William, 24, died on October 10, 2026, after entering the enclosure of an Amur tiger named Altai at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster.

An opening hearing at Doncaster Coroner’s Court heard that William had a history of mєntal illness, had previously been diagnosed with schizophrenia and had experienced episodes of psychosis.

His family has expressed concerns about his contact with mєntal health services before his dєatᩚh. Those concerns are now part of the wider questions surrounding the case, although no final findings have been made about whether his care contributed to the events of that day.

For his loved ones, the coming inquest represents an opportunity to better understand what happened and ensure their concerns are carefully examined.

The hearing was told that William was a self-employed online trader living in Doncaster and was under the care of adult mєntal health services.

Despite his diagnosis, he was described to the court as “highly functioning and independent with no care requirements.”

On the afternoon of October 10, William visited Yorkshire Wildlife Park. At approximately 1:30 p.m., he climbed over two fences and entered the tiger enclosure.

The tiger approached him, and the physical encounter resulted in multiple traumatic injuries. Paramedics attended the scene, but William was pronounced dead.

An initial post-mortem examination recorded multiple traumatic injuries as the cause of dєatᩚh.

The circumstances of the incident are being examined by the relevant authorities, while the coroner has requested that important evidence, including CCTV footage, be preserved.

HIS FAMILY HAD CONCERNS ABOUT mєntal HEALTH SUPPORT

During the opening of the inquest, the court heard that William’s family had raised “a number of concerns” about his contact with mєntal health services.

His relatives previously described him as having experienced significant mєntal illness over several years and said he had been prescribed strong medication.

The Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust launched an investigation following his dєatᩚh.

The family’s concerns have prompted questions about the support William received and whether there were opportunities to better understand his needs before the tᩚraɢedy.

However, the opening hearing did not establish that failures in mєntal health care caused his dєatᩚh. The investigation and full inquest are important steps in examining the available evidence before any conclusions are reached.

For families affected by mєntal illness, cases such as William’s can raise difficult questions about how services assess changing needs, maintain contact with patients and respond when additional support may be required.

Amid the investigations and public attention, William’s family has asked people to remember the person he was beyond the circumstances of his dєatᩚh.

In a tribute, they described him as “a bright, warm and engaging young man” who was deeply loved by his family and returned that love.

William had also appeared on television as a child, including in ITV’s comedy drama May Contain Nuts and the BBC Learning series True Stories.

His former stage school, Jackie Palmer Stage School, shared its sadness over his dєatᩚh and remembered watching him grow as both a person and performer.

The tributes offer a more personal picture of a young man whose life included family relationships, creative experiences and ambitions of his own.

His relatives have also expressed distress over footage of the incident being circulated online, asking for respect and privacy as they grieve. <Cite refs={[“turn783940search1″,”turn783940search8”]}/>

INVESTIGATIONS CONTINUE ON SEVERAL FRONTS

The mєntal health trust is investigating William’s care, while City of Doncaster Council has launched a health and safety investigation into the incident at the wildlife park.

The council is responsible for licensing the attraction and has said its findings will be shared with the coroner.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park has also cooperated with police and other relevant agencies. The park later reopened to visitors and confirmed that Altai, the tiger involved, remained safe and would not be euthanised because of the incident.

These separate investigations address different aspects of the tᩚraɢedy. The full inquest is expected to consider the evidence surrounding William’s dєatᩚh and the questions raised by his family.

The hearing was adjourned, with the full inquest scheduled for March 18, 2027. <Cite refs={[“turn783940search3″,”turn783940search4″,”turn783940search7”]}/>

A FAMILY HOPES THE INQUEST WILL BRING CLARITY

For William’s family, the loss is permanent, but they hope a careful examination of the evidence will help answer the questions that remain.

Their concerns about mєntal health services have not yet been resolved through a final inquest finding. The coming hearing will provide an opportunity for the circumstances to be examined in greater detail.

William’s dєatᩚh has also prompted wider reflection on the importance of compassionate, appropriate mєntal health support and the need to treat grieving families with dignity.

He was just 24 years old.

As his loved ones continue to mourn, their hope is that the investigation will provide a clearer account of what happened — and that William will be remembered not only for the tᩚraɢedy of his final day, but for the life and relationships that mattered to him.
