She Found a Letter Hours Before Her Wedding—And Canceled Everything

PART 1: THE LETTER IN THE ATTIC

“Don’t marry him, sweetheart. He’s not who you think he is.”

Those were the first words of a letter I found just three hours before my wedding.

The handwriting belonged to my mother.

But my mother had been dead for twelve years.

My name is Charlotte Evans. I’m 28 years old, and I was supposed to marry James Mitchell, a handsome businessman from Boston.

We’d been together for three wonderful years.

Or so I believed.

That morning, I returned to my childhood home to collect my mother’s pearl necklace.

I’d always dreamed of wearing it on my wedding day.

While searching through an old wooden chest in the attic, I discovered a yellow envelope hidden beneath her wedding dress.

My name was written across the front.

To my beautiful Charlotte. Open this before you say yes.

My hands began trembling.

Inside was a photograph.

My mother.

A younger James.

And another man I didn’t recognize.

The photograph was dated fifteen years earlier.

But James had told me we’d first met three years ago.

I quickly unfolded the letter.

Charlotte, if a man named James Mitchell ever enters your life, please be careful.

His family knows what happened to your father.

And they will do anything to keep the truth buried.

My heart stopped.

My father had supposedly died in a car accident when I was seven.

What did James have to do with him?

I called James immediately.

“James, did you know my mother?”

Silence.

Then he laughed nervously.

“Of course not, babe. Why?”

“Are you sure?”

“Charlotte, what’s going on?”

I looked at the photograph.

“Because I have a picture of you standing beside her.”

Another silence.

This time, longer.

Then his voice changed.

“Where did you find that?”

My stomach dropped.

“So you DO know her?”

“Charlotte, listen carefully. Don’t show that photograph to anyone.”

“Why?”

“Just trust me.”

Then he whispered:

“Especially not my father.”

And hung up.

An hour later, James arrived at my house.

He wasn’t alone.

His father, billionaire businessman Richard Mitchell, stood beside him.

Richard smiled coldly.

“Charlotte, sweetheart, I hear you’ve found something interesting.”

I stepped backward.

“How do you know about the letter?”

James looked away.

Richard slowly extended his hand.

“Give it to me. We don’t want any unpleasant surprises before the ceremony.”

I held the envelope against my chest.

“No.”

His smile disappeared.

“You’re making a terrible mistake.”

I stared at James.

“Tell me the truth. Why did you want to marry me?”

He said nothing.

Then Richard stepped closer.

“Because, Charlotte, your father left something behind.”

My heart pounded.

“What?”

Richard looked directly into my eyes.

“Something worth $40 million.”

I felt the room spinning.

But before I could speak, James suddenly grabbed his father’s arm.

“Dad, stop!”

Richard ignored him.

Then he said the words that destroyed everything I believed.

“Your father’s dєatᩚh wasn’t an accident, Charlotte.”

I couldn’t breathe.

And James whispered:

“Because I was there the night he died.”
