Oscar-Nominated Actress Barbara Barrie diᩚєs at 95 After Choosing Medically ᴀssisted dєatᩚh

Barbara Barrie, the respected American actress who earned an Academy Award nomination for her role in the 1979 coming-of-age film Breaking Away, has died at the age of 95. She pᴀssed away on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at her home in Manhattan. Her daughter, Jane Harnick, confirmed that the dєatᩚh was medically ᴀssisted following a diagnosis of terminal cancer.

Barrie had lived with significant health challenges for many years. In 2014 she was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a progressive and incurable lung disease in which scar tissue builds up in the lungs and gradually makes breathing more difficult. The recent terminal cancer diagnosis led her to choose medical ᴀssistance in dying under New York State law. According to her representative, she had been a supporter and advocate of the state’s Medical Aid in Dying legislation.

Born Barbara Ann Berman in 1931, Barrie began her professional acting career in the 1950s and went on to build a body of work that spanned film, television, and the stage for more than six decades. One of her earliest major recognitions came in 1964, when she won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for her performance in One Potato, Two Potato. The film, which depicted an interracial marriage and its consequences, was considered groundbreaking for its time.

Her most widely remembered screen role arrived fifteen years later in Breaking Away, directed by Peter Yates. Playing Evelyn Stohler, the warm and grounded mother of a young man obsessed with Italian bicycle racing, Barrie delivered a performance that earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. The film itself won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and remains a beloved coming-of-age classic. She later returned to the character in a short-lived television series adaptation and received an Emmy nomination in 1981 for her work.

On Broadway, Barrie received a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her role as Sarah in Stephen Sondheim’s landmark production of Company in 1971. Television viewers also knew her as Elizabeth Miller, the patient and witty wife of the тιтle character on the long-running sitcom Barney Miller (1975–1978), and as the mother of Goldie Hawn’s character in the 1980 comedy Private Benjamin. Her later television appearances included guest roles on series such as Family Ties, thirtysomething, Pushing Daisies, Army Wives, and Nurse Jackie.

In addition to her acting career, Barrie was a published author. She wrote two children’s books, Lone Star (1990) and Adam Zigzag (1994), as well as two nonfiction works that drew directly from her experiences with illness: Second Act (1997) and Don’t Die of Embarrᴀssment (1999).

Barrie was married to Jay Harnick, a theater director and the founder of TheaterWorksUSA, until his dєatᩚh in 2007. She is survived by their two children, Jane and Aaron Harnick, and three granddaughters.

In a statement released after her dєatᩚh, her representative confirmed that Barrie’s pᴀssing took place in accordance with New York’s Medical Aid in Dying law and noted her long-standing support for the measure. The family asked for privacy during their time of mourning.

Barbara Barrie’s career was defined by intelligent, understated performances that often portrayed resilient and thoughtful women. Her decision to end her life on her own terms after a terminal diagnosis has drawn attention both to the breadth of her work and to the continuing public discussion around end-of-life options for terminally ill adults.
