John Ramsey Continues Push for Advanced DNA Testing in Daughter’s Nearly 30-Year-Old Unsolved Murder

Nearly three decades after the 𝘬iᩚlling of six-year-old JonBenét Ramsey, her father remains determined to see modern forensic science applied to the remaining physical evidence in the hope of finally identifying the person responsible.

JonBenét was reported missing from the family’s Boulder, Colorado, home on the morning of December 26, 1996. Later that day her father found her body in a basement room. The child had been bound, gagged, and strangled with a homemade garrote. Investigators noted that the scene appeared deliberately staged to resemble a kidnapping. The case rapidly became one of the most closely followed unsolved crimes in the United States and has never resulted in an arrest or conviction.

In early 2025, John Ramsey, then 81, publicly renewed his call for Boulder authorities to retest key items using the latest DNA methods, particularly forensic genetic genealogy. He specifically identified the garrote and unidentified male DNA recovered from JonBenét’s clothing and under her fingernails as the most promising evidence. Ramsey told reporters he believed the technology now available could produce a meaningful result within months and estimated a 60 to 70 percent chance of success if the testing were carried out thoroughly. “DNA technology has advanced dramatically since the last round of testing was done in the mid-2000s,” he said.

The renewed appeal came after Jacqueline Dilson, a woman who has long pointed to her former partner, went public once again with allegations against Chris Wolf, a former journalist. Dilson claimed Wolf harbored deep resentment toward John Ramsey and that on the night of the murder he left their home for several hours, returning late, covered in mud, and visibly agitated. She first contacted police with her suspicions in January 1997 and later provided clothing and other household items she believed might contain relevant traces.

Wolf has consistently and strongly denied any involvement, describing the claims as “completely absurd.” In 1998 he voluntarily gave DNA, fingerprint, and handwriting samples to Boulder police. Authorities later stated that he had been thoroughly investigated; he has never been charged. Former lead detective Steve Thomas testified years afterward that he was uncertain whether the materials Dilson submitted were ever tested and expressed reservations about her reliability as a witness.

Ramsey met with Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfearn in January 2025. He indicated he intended to ask whether any of Dilson’s items had been retained or examined and whether Wolf remained a person of interest. Ramsey also offered to personally fund new laboratory work, though police indicated that would not be necessary. While he has long criticized the early investigation for focusing too heavily on the parents, Ramsey said he left the meeting with the new police leadership feeling cautiously encouraged.

In 2008, then-District Attorney Mary Lacy formally cleared John and Patsy Ramsey of involvement, citing DNA evidence that pointed away from the family. Despite that clearance, the case has remained open. Over the following years Ramsey and his representatives have repeatedly urged the use of forensic genetic genealogy—the same approach that helped solve the Golden State 𝘬iᩚller case and other long-cold investigations. He has continued to argue that the unidentified male DNA recovered at the scene still represents the clearest path to resolution.

By 2025 and into 2026, Ramsey maintained contact with Boulder police leadership and continued pressing for comprehensive retesting of remaining evidence with high-sensitivity methods capable of supporting genetic genealogy research. He has expressed the view that outside laboratories specializing in this work could extract usable profiles from samples previously considered too limited. As of late 2026 the investigation is still active, with no public announcement of a breakthrough, while Ramsey and his family keep advocating for the fullest possible application of current forensic tools.

The murder of JonBenét Ramsey remains one of the most enduring unsolved cases in recent American history. Her father continues to maintain that the technology now exists to put a name to the DNA left behind almost thirty years ago, and that only a determined commitment to retesting the evidence will determine whether that possibility can be realized.
