CAMBRIDGE SCIENTIST, 41, STILL MISSING AFTER diᩚadℓy SPAIN TRAIN 𝔠r𝘢sh — HER BROTHER SAYS FAMILY IS “CLINGING TO HOPE”

Dr. Marta Shahbazi, a respected biologist and mother of two, was travelling to Spain for a scientific award when the devastating railway collision occurred. Her family has provided DNA samples as the search and identification efforts continue.

A Cambridge University scientist and mother of two remains missing after a devastating train collision in Spain, as her family desperately waits for news.

Dr. Marta Shahbazi, 41, has not been heard from since Wednesday, October 28, when two high-speed trains collided near Urda in the province of Toledo.

The respected biologist was reportedly travelling aboard the Renfe AVE service when it collided with an Iryo train.

According to her brother, Carlos Shahbazi, Marta was travelling in the front carriage of the Renfe train.

As rescue teams continued searching the wreckage and authorities worked to identify victims, her family was left facing an agonizing wait.

“The odds are very slim, but we are clinging to a final shred of hope,” Carlos said.

He also confirmed that the family had provided DNA samples to help authorities with the identification process.

Speaking about his missing sister, Carlos described Marta as a loving person whose dedication to her work was matched by her warmth towards others.

“My sister Marta is a wonderful, affectionate and happy person, and a tireless worker,” he said.

Marta lived in Cambridge, England, with her two children, aged three and seven.

Her disappearance has sent shockwaves through the scientific community, where she was known for her work in developmental biology and her leadership of a research group at the Medical Research Council’s Laboratory of Molecular Biology.

For her family, however, she is first and foremost a mother, sister and loved one whose sudden absence has left an unimaginable uncertainty.

SPAIN-TRAIN-ACCIDENT-TRANSPORTSHE WAS TRAVELLING TO RECEIVE A SCIENTIFIC AWARD

Marta had been travelling to Huelva, in southern Spain, where she was expected to attend a scientific gathering and receive recognition from the Spanish Society for Developmental Biology.

Her research focuses on the earliest stages of human embryonic development, investigating how cells begin to organize and develop into the structures that eventually form the human body.

Her work also seeks to understand why some pregnancies fail during their earliest stages.

She had built an international reputation through her research at Cambridge, where she leads her own scientific team.

The journey to Spain was meant to be an important professional occasion — an opportunity to celebrate years of work and meet fellow researchers.

Instead, her family is now waiting for answers.

A CAREER DEVOTED TO UNDERSTANDING THE BEGINNING OF LIFE

Marta’s scientific journey began in Spain before taking her to Cambridge, where she developed a research programme examining the earliest stages of human development.

Her team’s work has helped scientists better understand how human embryos develop and why some early pregnancies do not progress.

She has also spoken about balancing motherhood with a demanding scientific career, describing her ambition to be both a committed mother and a full-time researcher.

Those who know her professionally have been left deeply concerned as news of her disappearance spreads.

FAMILIES STILL WAITING AFTER SPAIN’S diᩚadℓy RAIL DISASTER

The collision near Urda has become one of Spain’s most devastating railway disasters in recent years.

At least 69 people had been confirmed dead in reports published on October 30, while rescue teams and investigators continued working at the scene.

Authorities were also facing the difficult task of identifying victims and accounting for passengers whose whereabouts remained unknown.

Marta’s family has received no confirmation of her condition.

For her two young children, relatives and colleagues, the uncertainty is especially painful.

Her brother’s words capture the family’s desperate position: the odds may be slim, but they are not ready to give up hope.

As identification efforts continue, those closest to Marta are waiting for the news that will finally tell them what happened to her.
