CAMBRIDGE SCIENTIST, 41, MISSING AFTER diᩚadℓy SPAIN TRAIN 𝔠r𝘢sh — HER FAMILY IS CLINGING TO HOPE

Dr. Marta Shahbazi, a respected biologist and mother of two, was travelling aboard a high-speed train when it collided with another train in central Spain. Her family says they still have no confirmation of what happened to her.

A JOURNEY THAT ENDED IN tᩚraɢedy

A respected scientist working at the University of Cambridge is among those missing following a devastating high-speed train collision in Spain.

Dr. Marta Shahbazi, 41, was travelling aboard a Renfe high-speed train on Wednesday, October 28, when it collided with a stationary Iryo train near the town of Urda, in the province of Toledo.

The collision occurred on the Madrid-Seville rail line and left dozens of people dead and many others injured. Emergency crews worked through the wreckage as authorities began the difficult process of identifying victims and locating passengers who remained unaccounted for.

Marta had been travelling from Madrid towards Andalusia. She was expected to attend a scientific conference in Huelva, where she was due to receive an award recognising her research.

According to her brother, Carlos Shahbazi, Marta was seated in the front carriage of the Renfe train.

The family has not received confirmation of her condition. Her parents have provided DNA samples to help authorities with the identification process.

Speaking to Spanish newspaper El País, Carlos said the family knew nothing about what had happened to his sister.

“The odds are very slim, but we are clinging to a final shred of hope,” he said.

He described Marta as a wonderful, affectionate and happy person, as well as someone who worked tirelessly.

The uncertainty has left her loved ones facing an agonising wait as investigators continue identifying those involved in the disaster.

Beyond the tᩚraɢedy, Marta’s disappearance has drawn attention to an extraordinary scientific career.

Born in León, Spain, she leads her own research group at Cambridge University’s MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology.

Her work focuses on the earliest stages of human development, studying how a fertilised egg begins dividing and develops into an embryo.

Her research team previously achieved a major scientific milestone by growing human embryos in laboratory conditions for up to 13 days, helping researchers investigate a stage of development that is otherwise extremely difficult to study.

Marta also became known for championing the idea that women should be able to pursue demanding scientific careers while raising families.

She is a mother of two young children, aged seven and three.

SHE WAS TRAVELLING TO RECEIVE AN AWARD

Marta was heading to Huelva to receive an award for scientific excellence from the Spanish Society for Developmental Biology.

Earlier in October, she had also been named the winner of the 2026 Emerging Talent Award by the Society of Spanish Researchers in the United Kingdom.

In accepting that recognition, she expressed hope that her career could inspire future generations of Spanish scientists, both at home and abroad.

Now, instead of celebrating her achievements, her family and colleagues are waiting for news following the catastrophic collision.

INVESTIGATION CONTINUES

Spanish authorities are investigating how the Renfe train came to collide with the stationary Iryo service.

Preliminary accounts indicate that a failure in the railway signalling system led to trains being stopped. A subsequent decision by rail controllers allowed the Renfe train to continue at normal speed, despite another train remaining on the track ahead.

Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding that decision, alongside the railway systems and communications involved.

The 𝔠r𝘢sh has prompted questions about railway safety and the condition of the country’s high-speed network.

For Marta’s family, however, the investigation is secondary to one urgent question: what happened to their loved one?

As the search and identification process continues, they are holding on to hope while waiting for answers.
