PART 2 — THE SECRET HIDDEN BENEATH THE FLOORBOARDS!hl

“You should have left a note,” Martha repeated, her rifle still pointed toward the stranger.

Samuel nodded slowly.

“You’re right, ma’am. I should have.”

“Three weeks in my house, and you never thought to tell anyone who you were?”

“I tried.”

Martha narrowed her eyes.

“What does that mean?”

Samuel reached slowly into the inside pocket of his coat.

“Don’t move!” Martha shouted.

He froze.

“There’s something I need you to see. It’s the reason I brought these children here.”

“Take it out slowly. Two fingers. Nothing more.”

Samuel carefully withdrew a folded piece of paper, yellowed at the edges and stained with what looked like dried blood.

He placed it on the table.

Martha didn’t move.

“Read it,” he whispered.

“I don’t take orders from strangers.”

“Then look at the handwriting.”

Something in his voice made her uneasy.

She stepped closer, keeping the rifle between them, and picked up the paper.

The moment she unfolded it, her breath caught.

It was Thomas’s handwriting.

She knew every crooked letter, every uneven line. She had watched those hands write grocery lists, love letters, and the final note he had left beside her pillow before his fatal ride.

But this letter was different.

It was dated November 12.

Almost a month after Thomas had supposedly died.

Martha’s fingers began to tremble.

“Where did you get this?”

Samuel looked at the children.

“Your husband gave it to me.”

“That’s impossible.”

“I wish it were.”

“Thomas is ᴅᴇᴀᴅ!”

The youngest girl suddenly lifted her head.

“Papa said you would say that.”

Martha turned toward her.

“What?”

The little girl stood, clutching a ragged doll against her chest.

“Papa told us that if a lady with gray eyes ever came home, we should give her the silver key.”

Samuel closed his eyes.

Martha felt the room tilt.

Thomas had always called her eyes storm clouds. Nobody else knew that.

“What is your name, sweetheart?” she asked.

“Lucy.”

“Lucy, who is your papa?”

The little girl pointed at Samuel.

Martha looked back at the stranger.

“You’re their father. You said so yourself.”

Samuel nodded.

“Yes. But I’m not talking about their father.”

He paused.

“I’m talking about the man who raised them after their real father disappeared.”

Martha’s blood ran cold.

“Who was their real father?”

Samuel looked directly into her eyes.

“Thomas Cordell.”

The rifle nearly slipped from her hands.

“No.”

“I’m sorry.”

“No! My husband never had children!”

The oldest girl suddenly stepped forward.

“That’s what he told you, wasn’t it?”

Martha stared at her.

The girl was holding something in her hand.

A small silver locket.

Martha recognized it immediately.

It was the one Thomas had supposedly lost years ago during a cattle drive. She remembered searching the entire ranch for it because he had been devastated.

The girl opened it.

Inside was a tiny pH๏τograph of Thomas holding a newborn baby.

On the back, in his unmistakable handwriting, were six words:

My children. My greatest unfinished promise.

Martha felt her knees weaken.

“How old are you?” she whispered.

“Twelve,” the girl answered. “My name is Anna.”

Twelve.

Thomas had been away on cattle drives twelve years ago.

Martha’s mind began racing through memories she had buried beneath years of marriage.

The unexplained journeys. The money missing from their savings. The occasional letters he claimed were from old business partners.

Had he been living another life all along?

“Why didn’t he bring you here?” Martha demanded.

Anna’s eyes filled with tears.

“He wanted to. But he said someone was watching us.”

“Who?”

Before the girl could answer, a sharp metallic sound came from outside.

Samuel immediately turned toward the window.

His expression changed.

“Get away from the windows!”

“What is happening?” Martha demanded.

“Put out the lamps!”

“You’re going to explain yourself right now!”

Samuel grabbed the youngest child and pulled him away from the table.

Then came three hard knocks at the front door.

Everyone froze.

A man’s voice called from outside.

“Samuel Reed! We know you’re in there!”

Samuel went pale.

Martha raised her rifle again.

“Who is that?”

He barely moved his lips.

“The man who killed their mother.”

A fourth knock shook the door.

Then a voice Martha recognized spoke from the porch.

“Mrs. Cordell? It’s been a long time.”

Her heart stopped.

It was Sheriff Harlan Briggs.

The same sheriff who had personally delivered the news of Thomas’s dєatᩚh.

The same man who had arranged his burial.

The same man who had told her there was nothing left to investigate.

“Open this door, Martha,” the sheriff called. “That man is dangerous. He’s stolen your property and kidnapped those children.”

Martha looked at Samuel.

“Is he lying?”

Samuel shook his head.

“Not about everything.”

“Then what is he telling the truth about?”

Samuel reached into his coat again and pulled out a small brᴀss key.

“Because the sheriff didn’t come here to arrest me.”

He looked toward

the family pH๏τograph above the fireplace.

“He’s come to destroy what’s hidden beneath your floorboards.”

Martha’s eyes followed his.

“What is beneath my floorboards?”

Samuel took a shaky breath.

“The evidence Thomas left behind.”

Suddenly, the youngest boy began crying.

Anna rushed to cover his mouth, but it was too late.

Outside, the sheriff shouted:

“Last chance, Martha! Open the door!”

Then came the unmistakable sound of a rifle being cocked.

Samuel grabbed Martha’s arm.

“Listen carefully. Your husband didn’t die in that riding accident.”

Martha stared at him, unable to breathe.

“What did you say?”

Samuel leaned closer and whispered the words that shattered everything:

“Thomas was alive when they buried his coffin. And the man who signed his dєatᩚh certificate is standing outside your door.”

A gunsH๏τ exploded through the front window.

Glᴀss shattered.

The children screamed.

Martha threw herself over Lucy as Samuel dragged Anna and the others behind the kitchen wall.

Then a second sH๏τ struck the wooden door.

“THREE MINUTES!” the sheriff shouted. “THEN WE BURN THE WHOLE HOUSE DOWN!”

Samuel pushed the brᴀss key into Martha’s palm.

“There’s a trapdoor beneath the old rug. Find what’s inside. Whatever happens, don’t let him get that ledger.”

Martha looked at the key, then at the man who had just turned her entire world upside down.

“Why should I trust you?”

Samuel’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because Thomas saved my life once. And I promised him I’d keep his children alive until you came home.”

He hesitated.

Then he added something that made Martha’s blood run cold.

“He also told me that if I ever found you, I had to ask you one question.”

“What question?”

Samuel swallowed hard.

“Did you ever discover what was inside the second grave?”

Martha stopped breathing.

There had only been one funeral.

One coffin.

One grave.

At least, that was what she had been told.

And suddenly, from beneath the floorboards, came three slow knocks.

Someone was down there.

Martha slowly turned toward the rug.

Samuel whispered:

“Don’t open it unless you’re ready to learn what really happened to your husband.”

The sheriff began kicking the door.

And beneath their feet, the knocking came again.

Three times.

Then a familiar voice rose from the darkness.

“Martha… sweetheart… don’t let them take the children.”

She dropped the rifle.

She knew that voice.

She had heard it in her dreams every night since October.

It was Thomas.
