DIY SOS FANS LAUNCH HUGE PETITION TO SAVE BBC SHOW AS NICK KNOWLES BREAKS DOWN OVER “END OF AN ERA”

More than 46,000 supporters have reportedly signed a petition calling on the BBC to save the beloved renovation programme. Presenter Nick Knowles has become emotional while discussing its future, warning that the show cannot simply be made smaller without losing what made it special.

Fans of DIY SOS are rallying together in an effort to save one of Britain’s best-loved television programmes after the BBC announced plans to put the long-running series on hold in 2027.

The campaign has attracted tens of thousands of signatures, with viewers urging the broadcaster to reconsider its decision.

The petition was launched by David Claydon, a self-employed plasterer who took part in the programme in 2025. He described DIY SOS as far more than entertainment, highlighting how its volunteers and tradespeople have transformed the lives of families facing difficult circumstances.

The campaign has gained momentum as presenter Nick Knowles has spoken increasingly candidly about the show’s future, expressing doubts that its traditional format can ever return.

For the thousands of people who have contributed to the programme over the years, the announcement has felt like the end of an era.

The Change.org petition asks the BBC to reconsider its plans and keep DIY SOS on television.

Its organiser says the programme has brought together skilled tradespeople, suppliers and volunteers who donate their time and resources to help families rebuild their homes and their lives.

The appeal has attracted more than 40,000 signatures, with later reports putting support above 46,000.

Supporters have flooded the petition page with messages explaining why the programme means so much to them.

One viewer described it as a feel-good programme that helps people who genuinely need support.

Another questioned why the BBC would consider removing a show that demonstrates how communities can come together to make a difference.

For many fans, its appeal has never been just about home renovations. It is about ordinary people giving their time, skills and energy to help complete strangers.

Nick Knowles, who has presented DIY SOS since its launch in 1999, has admitted that he is deeply disappointed by the BBC’s decision.

During an emotional appearance on This Morning, he explained that the programme would not return in the familiar format viewers have known for more than two decades.

He said the BBC had indicated that any future version would need to be smaller and more cost-effective.

But Nick questioned whether that would work.

“If you have ever been on DIY SOS – and there are 26,000 of you out there who have – you will know you can’t do that smaller,” he said.

He explained that the large-scale renovations and community projects are central to the programme’s identity.

The presenter became visibly emotional while reflecting on the people who had made the show possible, describing the change as the end of an era.

He also paid tribute to the tradespeople, suppliers, volunteers and families who had given so much to the programme.

WHY IS THE BBC PUTTING DIY SOS ON HOLD?

The BBC announced that DIY SOS would be rested in 2027 as part of its wider financial savings programme.

The broadcaster has said the decision is connected to its financial pressures and its target of saving £500 million over three years.

However, the BBC has stressed that the programme has not been permanently cancelled.

Instead, it has commissioned a new spin-off called DIY SOS Rebuilt My Life, produced by South Shore.

The new series is expected to revisit families and successful projects from the programme’s history rather than carry out the same large-scale transformations.

A BBC spokesperson said the move would allow the broadcaster to expand the DIY SOS brand in a more cost-effective way.

The annual DIY SOS Children in Need special has also been rested.

26 YEARS OF CHANGING LIVES

Since its first broadcast in 1999, DIY SOS has brought together thousands of tradespeople, suppliers and volunteers.

The programme has helped families dealing with serious illness, disability, bereavement and devastating housing circumstances.

Some projects have involved enormous community efforts, with volunteers working against tight deadlines to transform homes into safe and accessible places for families.

Nick has repeatedly said that the people involved are the real heart of the programme.

He has also thanked the families who trusted the team with their personal stories, as well as the volunteers who gave their time despite having their own jobs and responsibilities.

One of the programme’s most significant charitable projects was the construction of a children’s cancer unit for Children in Need, demonstrating the scale of what the team and its supporters could achieve together.

FANS HOPE THEIR VOICES WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE

The petition has become a public expression of how strongly viewers feel about the programme.

Many are hoping that the growing support will persuade the BBC to reconsider its plans or find a way to preserve the original format.

Nick has acknowledged the disappointment shared by fans while recognising that the broadcaster faces difficult financial decisions.

But his comments have raised an important question about whether a programme built on large-scale generosity and community involvement can survive if its format is significantly reduced.

For now, the BBC’s plan remains to rest the original series in 2027 and replace it with a more cost-effective spin-off.

For millions of viewers, DIY SOS was never just another television programme. It showed what can happen when strangers come together to change someone’s life. And now, those same viewers are coming together to ask the BBC not to let that spirit disappear. 🤍
