She Points the Gun at the Lens, and the Face Looking Back Has Been ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Since 2002

The sH๏τ is built to put you where a man on a Florida highway would have been in 1989 or 1990, and the woman aiming the gun is not recovered footage. Investigation Discovery’s three-part series Unmasking a Monster: Aileen Wuornos, which premiered on ID and HBO Max on September 30, 2026, from 8 to 11 p.m. ET/PT, uses what producers call a digital mask: a three-dimensional model of Wuornos, built from archival pH๏τographs and video that caught her from every angle, then laid over a living actress with the help of AI. Stephen Dost, vice president of content at Arrow Media and an executive producer, told The Hollywood Reporter that this specific deployment is a first for documentary. Kyran Speirs, Arrow’s head of post-production, described the model to ᴅᴇᴀᴅline as a mask that translates the performance one for one. Rolling Stone noted the early тιтle card that discloses “advanced generative VFX,” and then described the gun-to-camera image as the real Aileen Wuornos. Almost. The almost is the entire product.

Wuornos was executed by lєthaℓ inje𝔠ti☉n at Florida State Prison in October 2002. She had been convicted of murdering six men and had admitted killings tied to seven, along Central Florida highways in 1989 and 1990, after first claiming self-defense and later dropping that claim. Archival moving images of her are, in Dost’s words to The Hollywood Reporter, very limited. Traditional reenactments, ID president Jason Sarlanis told the same outlet, have been part of true crime from the start and have also been an obstacle to believability, because producers used to hide the actor’s face with shoulders, shadows and abstract angles so the audience would forgive the mismatch. This series bets the other way. Dost said that if you are going to show a face, there has to be a reason, and that Wuornos was the case he kept returning to because the suffering and the 𝘢bu𝘴e could be read on the face they were copying.

The idea, Sarlanis told Rolling Stone, started over drinks about three years earlier, after he and Dost had seen a British comedy that crudely superimposed celebrity faces on impersonators. Arrow Media, a Fremantle company producing for Investigation Discovery, waited until the tool and the story lined up. On set there were no finished effects. Dost told The Hollywood Reporter that takes ended in a pin drop, and that it already felt as if Wuornos were in the room before any mask existed. The actress underneath is Morag Peacock. Casting was a bone-structure problem. Dost said the technology at the time needed someone with basically the same face shape, and that Peacock’s eyes did the heavy lifting. She spent about ninety minutes in hair and makeup and wore one prosthetic tooth, then played the mannerisms, the quirks and the way Wuornos used her eyes. The mask came later, in post, copying micro-expressions onto a surface makeup cannot change, because makeup cannot change bone structure.

Dost’s comparison, given to USA Today, is an impossible prosthetic on the day: even that, he said, would fail. The series also puts the same treatment on other people in the case. The Hollywood Reporter reported nine other actors and their real-life counterparts. USA Today named childhood friend Dawn Botkins, defense attorney Steven Glazer, and investigators Brian Jarvis and David Taylor among the consented faces. Living participants signed. Wuornos could not. The words, producers insist, are not invented. Dost told Rolling Stone that nothing is made up, and that scenes come from transcripts, police records and what interviewees remembered. Viewers are therefore watching three layers and being asked to treat them as one woman: a sourced line, a human performance, and a manufactured face that looks back when the gun comes up.
