John Ramsey Renews Call for Advanced DNA Testing in Decades-Old JonBenét Ramsey Murder Case

Nearly thirty years after the murder of six-year-old JonBenét Ramsey, her father continues to press authorities to apply the most advanced DNA technology available to remaining evidence in the hope of identifying her 𝘬iᩚller. John Ramsey, now 81, has publicly renewed his appeal for the Boulder Police Department to retest key items recovered from the 1996 crime scene using modern forensic genetic genealogy methods.

In recent interviews, Ramsey has specifically pointed to the makeshift garrote used in the 𝘬iᩚlling, as well as unidentified male DNA found on JonBenét’s clothing and beneath her fingernails. He believes these samples, if examined with current techniques, could yield a breakthrough within months. Ramsey has estimated a 60 to 70 percent chance of success if the testing is carried out properly, noting that DNA technology has advanced dramatically since the last significant round of analysis in the mid-2000s. He has even offered to personally fund the additional testing, though police have indicated that outside funding would not be required.

Ramsey met with Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfearn earlier in the year and later described the discussion as encouraging. He has said he left the meeting with cautious optimism about the department’s current leadership and its willingness to continue pursuing the case. At the same time, he has long maintained that early investigative decisions focused too heavily on the family and diverted attention from other leads.

The latest public comments from Ramsey come amid renewed attention on claims made by Jacqueline Dilson, a woman who has alleged that her former partner, journalist Chris Wolf, was responsible for the murder. Dilson has described Wolf’s behavior on the night of the crime as highly unusual and has previously provided items to investigators that she believed might contain relevant evidence. Wolf has strongly rejected the accusations, describing them as “completely absurd” and stating that he had nothing to do with the 𝘬iᩚlling. He voluntarily submitted DNA, fingerprint, and handwriting samples to Boulder police in the late 1990s. The department has previously said Wolf was thoroughly investigated.

JonBenét Ramsey was reported missing from her family’s home in Boulder, Colorado, on the morning of December 26, 1996. Later that day her father found her body in a basement room. The child had been bound and strangled, and the scene showed signs of staging intended to resemble a kidnapping. For years John and Patsy Ramsey were treated as primary suspects. In 2008, then-District Attorney Mary Lacy formally cleared the family, citing DNA evidence that excluded them, and issued a public apology for the suspicion they had endured. Patsy Ramsey died in 2006.

Boulder police and the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office have repeatedly stated that the investigation remains open and active. Detectives have processed more than 21,000 tips, letters, and emails and have conducted interviews with more than 1,000 people across 19 states. The department continues to collaborate with the FBI, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, and private DNA laboratories. Officials have noted that the available DNA samples are extremely small and complex, which creates the risk that further testing could consume the remaining material. Discussions with laboratories about the feasibility of additional analysis and genetic genealogy work are ongoing.

In more recent developments, family members have confirmed that certain items of evidence have undergone renewed examination at the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. These include both previously untested materials from the crime scene and older samples being reanalyzed with improved technology. John Ramsey and his son John Andrew Ramsey have continued to advocate for the use of specialized outside laboratories experienced in forensic genetic genealogy, arguing that this approach currently offers the strongest prospect of generating a usable lead.

As of 2026, the murder of JonBenét Ramsey remains unsolved. Boulder police maintain that the case continues to be a priority and that they will pursue every viable lead. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Boulder Police tip line at 303-441-1974, email BouldersMostWanted@bouldercolorado.gov, or call Northern Colorado Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
