GHANAIAN MOTHER DEVASTATED AFTER 15-YEAR-OLD SON IS KILLED IN NEW YORK JUST ONE YEAR AFTER MOVING TO THE U.S.

Doris Adu Gyamfi is grieving in Kumasi after her teenage son, Javits Frimpong, was fatally shot while walking to school in the Bronx. Ghana’s government has pledged financial, legal and consular support to the family.

A mother in Ghana is facing an unimaginable heartbreak after her 15-year-old son was fatally shot in New York, just one year after moving to the United States to reunite with his father and begin a new life.

Doris Adu Gyamfi, who lives in Kumasi, is grieving the loss of her son, Javits Frimpong, who was killed in the Bronx on Thursday, October 29, 2026.

The teenager had arrived in the United States from Ghana approximately a year earlier. His family had hoped the move would give him an opportunity to build a brighter future.

Instead, his life was cut short in a śh́óóting that has devastated relatives and shaken both the Ghanaian and Bronx communities.

Teenager killed while walking to school

Javits was on his way to school shortly before 9:30 a.m. when he was shot in the abdomen near East 171st Street and Crotona Place in the Claremont section of the Bronx.

Police officers found him with a gunshot wound and rushed him to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he later died.

His father, Thomas Frimpong, described his son as a quiet teenager who had recently been dealing with bullying at school.

Thomas said the school principal had informed him that two students were allegedly harassing Javits and had been suspended.

The grieving father has questioned whether the reported bullying could have been connected to the śh́óóting. However, police have not confirmed any link, and investigators have not publicly established a motive.

Authorities have been searching for three people in connection with the 𝘬iᩚlling. No arrests had been announced in the latest reports.

The tᩚraɢedy has prompted a response from Ghana’s government.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa spoke with Thomas Frimpong and assured the family that the government would work with U.S. authorities to pursue justice.

Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also pledged legal and consular assistance and called for a thorough investigation into the teenager’s 𝘬iᩚlling.

In a further show of support, the minister announced that the government would cover the full travel expenses of Javits’ mother so she could travel to New York for her son’s funeral. The administration also offered to contribute toward ensuring he receives a dignified farewell.

Meanwhile, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that President Donald Trump had agreed to grant Doris a visa so she could travel from Ghana to say goodbye to her son in person.

The Associated Press reported that the White House had not immediately confirmed the visa arrangement when the announcement was made. Ghanaian officials were assigned to assist Doris with the application process.

A future cut short

Javits had been in the United States for only about a year. He had moved across the Atlantic to reunite with his father and begin a new chapter of his life.

Now, his family is preparing to say goodbye under circumstances no parent should have to face.

His dєatᩚh has sparked grief in Ghana and New York, while raising renewed concerns about violence affecting young people and the safety of students on their way to school.

For Doris, thousands of miles away in Kumasi, the immediate priority is being able to reach New York and hold a final farewell for her son.

As the investigation continues, both families and community members are calling for answers and accountability.

Javits was just 15 years old. His future, and the possibilities his family had hoped the move to America would bring, were taken away far too soon.
