JOGGER, 28, STABBED TWICE IN THE NECK JUST MINUTES AFTER SPEAKING TO HER PARENTS — AS SHE REMAINS ON LIFE SUPPORT
Katie Suarez had told her parents she was just half a mile away and would soon meet them. Instead, her father found her critically injured on a Brooklyn waterfront path.
A 28-year-old woman remains on life support after being stabbed twice in the neck while out jogging in Brooklyn, New York.
Katie Suarez was attacked on the evening of Friday, October 30, along the Shore Parkway Greenway in the Bath Beach neighbourhood.
Now, new details have emerged about the final moments before the attack — including a phone call with her parents in which she reassured them that she was only about half a mile away.
According to The Irish Sun, Katie had arranged to meet her parents outside her workplace, a TD Bank branch, after finishing work.
She met her mother at around 6:30 p.m., but her father was running late. Katie decided to go for a run along the familiar waterfront path while waiting.
At approximately 8 p.m., her parents called to ask where she was.
She told them she was about half a mile away — a distance she could cover in roughly five minutes.
It was the last conversation they would have with their daughter.
HER FATHER FOUND HER ON THE PATH
When Katie failed to arrive at the agreed meeting point and stopped answering her phone, her parents became increasingly worried.
They separated to search for her.
Her father eventually found her near Bay 17th Street and Shore Parkway, lying on the path with stab wounds to both sides of her neck.
He reportedly begged a passer-by to call emergency services.
Katie was rushed to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn in ᑕriᩚtiᩚcal condition, where she remains on life support.
The New York Post reported, citing police sources, that she had been declared brain dead. The Irish Sun described her as remaining in a coma. Her family has not publicly provided a detailed medical update in the reports available.
POLICE INVESTIGATE POSSIBLE RANDOM ATTACK
Investigators believe Katie was stabbed twice and managed to run approximately 100 feet before collapsing, according to reports citing law-enforcement sources.
Her pink phone and jewellery were reportedly still with her when she was found.
Police have described the attack as apparently random, with investigators reportedly finding no immediate evidence of robbery or a 𝘴єxual motive. However, the motive has not been officially established.
No suspect had been publicly identified and no arrest had been announced in the reports published on November 2.
Authorities have deployed specialist teams, including divers, K-9 units and drones, as they search for evidence and attempt to identify the person responsible.
The NYPD is also appealing to anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity near the eastbound bike path along the Belt Parkway, between Bay 8th Street and Bay 17th Street, around the time of the attack.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
A KIND WOMAN AND DEDICATED RUNNER
Katie worked as a bank teller and had reportedly been training for the New York City Marathon.
Neighbours described her as kind, respectful and soft-spoken, expressing shock that someone they knew could become the victim of such a violent attack.
One neighbour told the New York Post that Katie had been “exceptional” in the way she treated people.
The marathon organisers also expressed their sadness, saying their hearts were with her family and the running community.
A FAMILY WAITING FOR ANSWERS
For Katie’s parents, the evening began as an ordinary family meeting after work.
They had spoken to their daughter, knew she was nearby and expected to see her within minutes.
Instead, her father became the person who found her after the attack.
As investigators continue searching for the attacker, Katie’s loved ones are facing an agonising wait at the hospital.
Police are urging anyone with information to come forward as the investigation continues.
