The Lawyers Thought Life Support Was Coming Off. On the Sixth Day She Woke Up and Knew Exactly Who Had Tried to K*ll Her

For six days after the night of September 30, Christa Pike was the patient her own lawyers had been told not to expect back. She had been taken from the exั”๐” utiโ˜‰n chamber at Riverbend Maximum Security Insั‚ฮนั‚ution in Nashville unconscious and critically ill, after two injections of pentobarbital. An October 2 filing in Davidson County Chancery Court described her as intubated, on a ventilator, unconscious, with both arms swollen, burned, and blistered. As late as Monday, October 5, attorney Randall Spivey has said, the legal team believed she was brain-แด…แด‡แด€แด… and that life support would be removed the next day. It would have been the second botched exั”๐” utiโ˜‰n in Tennessee in 2026, and it would have ended in a hospital rather than a chamber.

On Tuesday, October 6, she woke up and began to talk. Spivey, speaking to reporters after a court hearing the next day, said the turn surprised everyone in the room, including him, including the defense team, and including the medical team. He said she was angry and confused, and very aware that the State had tried to execute her. A colleague, Luke Ihnen, told the court she was speaking only in a limited way. The medical picture Spivey then put on the record is not a recovery story. Pike cannot swallow and has not been able to eat. She has pneumonia. She has a blood clot in one arm. She cannot move either arm. Her hands, he said, had swollen until they looked like inflated surgical gloves, and no one can yet say what function she will get back. She is shackled to the hospital bed. Doctors had asked that an arm be freed so they could treat her. State officials, the lawyers said, refused.

Doctors who spoke to NBC News offered a mechanical explanation that, if it holds, rewrites the night of September 30. Most of the pentobarbital appears to have gone into the tissue of her arm rather than her bloodstream. Enough drug reached her to put her under. Not enough reached her heart or her breathing to ๐˜ฌiแฉšll her. That would explain the witness accounts from the chamber itself: gasping, loud exhalation, snoring, a complaint about the arm, a heartbeat that did not stop. The Department of Correction has said it followed every step of the lawful protocol approved by the attorney general, that the chemical has consistently been effective, and that the protocol does not allow further procedures beyond what was done that evening. Pike was then moved to an off-site hospital. The departmentโ€™s account and the doctorsโ€™ account can both be true. A protocol can be followed and still fail if the drug never fully enters the vein.

On October 7 Chancellor Iโ€™Ashea Myles ordered the State to preserve the syringes, drug packaging, IV lines, and restraints from the attempt, and granted the defense access to document Pikeโ€™s condition. Ihnen told the court the State has made no promise that Pike will not face another exั”๐” utiโ˜‰n. Her lawyers are arguing that a second attempt would violate the Eighth Amendment, and they have renewed the plea they lost on September 28: that Governor Bill Lee commute the sentence to life without parole. Lee has not answered that renewed plea in public. What the record does show is a woman who was expected to be removed from a ventilator and instead woke up knowing the State had tried to ๐˜ฌiแฉšll her, unable to lift her arms, and still under a dั”atแฉšh sentence.
