28-YEAR-OLD KATIE SUAREZ FIGHTS FOR HER LIFE AFTER BEING STABBED WHILE JOGGING IN BROOKLYN
The New York woman was training for the NYC Marathon when she was attacked along a waterfront running path. Her father later found her after she failed to arrive at their planned meeting place.
A routine evening run turned into a nightmare for 28-year-old Katie Suarez after she was brutally stabbed while jogging along a waterfront path in Brooklyn, New York.
The attack happened shortly after 8 p.m. on Friday, October 30, along the Shore Parkway Greenway in the Bath Beach neighborhood, near Bay Parkway and Cropsey Avenue.
According to the New York Police Department, Suarez was running along the bike path when an unidentified attacker stabbed her multiple times in the neck.
Emergency medical workers rushed her to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn, where she was listed in ᑕriᩚtiᩚcal condition.
Suarez had reportedly been training for the TCS New York City Marathon, which was scheduled to take place on Sunday, November 1.
HER FATHER FOUND HER AFTER SHE FAILED TO ARRIVE
Some of the most heartbreaking details emerged from the moments before the attack.
Suarez had finished work earlier that evening and met her mother near her workplace. She later went for a run while waiting to meet her parents.
At around 8 p.m., she spoke with them by phone and reportedly said she was approximately half a mile away from their planned meeting point.
But she never arrived.
When her parents tried calling again and received no answer, they became worried and went looking for her.
It was her father who eventually found her lying injured on the running path near Bay 17th Street. He reportedly called for help, and emergency responders rushed her to the hospital.
Police sources told media outlets that Suarez had suffered wounds on both sides of her neck and managed to run a short distance before collapsing.
REPORTS ON HER CONDITION
Suarez remains on life support, according to reports published on November 2.
Some media outlets citing sources familiar with the investigation have reported that she was declared brain dead. However, police have continued to describe her condition as grave or ᑕriᩚtiᩚcal, and no publicly available official medical statement has confirmed that diagnosis.
Her family is facing an agonizing wait as she remains hospitalized.
POLICE LAUNCH MAJOR SEARCH FOR THE ATTACKER
The NYPD has launched an extensive investigation to identify the person responsible.
Officers and detectives have searched the surrounding area, with assistance from K-9 units, drones, divers and other resources. Investigators are also reviewing available surveillance footage and gathering evidence.
Police have not released a description of the suspect, and no arrests had been announced in the latest reports.
Although investigators have considered the possibility that the attack was random, authorities have not established a definitive motive.
The NYPD is asking anyone who may have seen Suarez or noticed suspicious activity between 7:56 p.m. and 8:12 p.m. on October 30, along the eastbound bike path between Bay 8th Street and Bay 17th Street, to come forward.
