MOTHER AND DAUGHTER FOUND DEAD IN SUSPECTED GRIZZLY BEAR ATTACK: JENNY BALCARRAS, 48, AND DAUGHTER SELAH REED DISCOVERED AFTER FAMILY’S DESPERATE SEARCH

A mother and daughter who shared a deep love of nature and the outdoors have been found dead following a suspected grizzly bear attack in British Columbia, Canada. Jennifer “Jenny” Balcarras, 48, and her youngest daughter, Selah Reed, had gone for what was believed to be an ordinary afternoon walk near their home. Days later, their family received the devastating news that neither would be coming home.

A family in British Columbia is facing an unimaginable loss after a mother and daughter were found dead following a suspected grizzly bear attack near the community of Bella Coola.

Jennifer Balcarras, known to loved ones as Jenny, and her youngest daughter, Selah Reed, were reported missing on Sunday, November 1, 2026, after relatives became increasingly concerned when they failed to hear from them.

The two women had reportedly gone for a walk on Saturday afternoon, October 31, near the Snooka West Trail, an area they knew well and regularly visited.

Their vehicle was later discovered parked near the trailhead, prompting an extensive search involving the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, search-and-rescue crews and conservation officers.

The search ended in tᩚraɢedy.

Jenny’s body was discovered on Monday afternoon, November 2, in the area surrounding Snooka West Trail. Her daughter Selah was found the following day, Tuesday, November 3.

Investigators believe a bear may have been involved in the deaths, although the exact circumstances remain under investigation.

For their family, the tᩚraɢedy is particularly devastating because the two women were extremely close and shared a passion for spending time outdoors.

According to relatives, Jenny and Selah shared a special relationship and frequently enjoyed walking and exploring nature together.

Their family described them as two people who were comfortable in the outdoors and familiar with the environment around Bella Coola.

The trail where they were found was reportedly only a short drive from their home and was not considered an especially remote location.

Jenny’s brother, Matthew Balcarras, spoke about the devastating discovery and remembered his sister as a strong woman who had spent much of her life living in coastal communities.

He explained that the family initially became worried when the pair failed to attend a planned online family gathering.

As hours passed without hearing from them, concern turned into fear.

A relative eventually contacted police to request a welfare check, leading authorities to discover their vehicle near the trail.

Matthew described his sister as a small woman with extraordinary strength and a deep connection to the natural world.

He also emphasized that Jenny and Selah were not inexperienced hikers. They had spent years living in remote coastal communities and were familiar with the wilderness.

Jenny was 48 years old, a mother of four and a grandmother.

She had recently moved to Bella Coola, where she worked as an art therapist at a local school.

Her professional journey included working with children, adults and older people, using art as a way to help individuals express themselves and navigate emotional challenges.

Before moving to Bella Coola, she had worked at Bella Bella Community School and spent time living in other coastal communities in British Columbia and Alaska.

Her family remembered her as a woman who loved books, music, painting and spending time outdoors.

She was also passionate about playing guitar and singing.

Her brother recalled how Jenny would paint murals in the homes of family members, leaving behind colorful reminders of her creativity and personality.

He described her as a central figure in their family, someone whose presence and kindness had touched the lives of many people.

In June 2023, the Hailika’as Heiltsuk Health Centre Society introduced Jenny as its new art therapist, highlighting her experience working with different age groups and her compassionate, trauma-informed approach.

Her work reflected the qualities her family remembered most: gentleness, creativity and a genuine concern for others.

SELAH REED: A GENTLE SOUL WHO SHARED HER MOTHER’S PASSION

Selah Reed was Jenny’s youngest daughter.

She worked as an educational assistant while also continuing her education part-time through Athabasca University’s online learning program.

Her family described her as a gentle, sweet and quiet young woman who had a strong interest in ballet, art and hiking.

She shared many of her mother’s interests, and the two often spent time together enjoying the outdoors.

According to her uncle, Selah was almost always beside Jenny whenever her mother went hiking.

The pair were described as being inseparable, sharing a bond that extended beyond their relationship as mother and daughter.

Selah also loved animals and was particularly attached to her cat, Suga, whom she reportedly enjoyed carrying around in a special backpack with a transparent bubble window.

She had a future filled with possibilities, balancing her work, studies and personal interests.

Now, her family is left grieving the loss of a young woman whose life was closely intertwined with the person she loved most.

THE FAMILY’S DESPERATE SEARCH

The events leading to the discovery began when relatives realized they had not heard from Jenny and Selah as expected.

The women had reportedly gone walking on Saturday afternoon.

When they failed to appear for an online family gathering that evening, relatives initially hoped they had simply been delayed.

But Sunday arrived without any communication.

A family member contacted the authorities and requested a welfare check.

Police subsequently located the women’s vehicle near the Snooka West Trail.

Search efforts intensified, with RCMP officers, search-and-rescue personnel and conservation officers working to locate the missing pair.

On Monday afternoon, Jenny was found dead.

The search for Selah continued until Tuesday afternoon, when her body was also located.

The discovery brought an end to the search but marked the beginning of an unimaginable period of grief for their family.

AUTHORITIES INVESTIGATE A SUSPECTED GRIZZLY BEAR ATTACK

The British Columbia Conservation Officer Service is leading the investigation into the suspected animal attack.

Inspector Jeff Tyre confirmed that evidence at the scene suggested an animal had been involved.

Officers have been deployed to search the surrounding area, locate potentially dangerous bears and establish what happened.

Authorities have also begun trapping efforts to identify any bear that may have been responsible.

If a captured bear is determined to have caused the fatal attack, officials have stated that it will be euthanized in accordance with provincial wildlife-conflict response guidelines.

The public has been strongly advised to stay away from the Snooka West Trail while the investigation continues.

Officials emphasized that keeping people away from the area is essential both for public safety and to allow investigators to carry out their work.

BELLA COOLA REMEMBERS ANOTHER HORRIFIC BEAR ATTACK

The deaths have brought back painful memories of another serious grizzly bear incident in the same community in November 2025.

During a school field trip, a grizzly bear attacked a group of approximately 20 elementary schoolchildren and teachers near the Bella Coola River.

The attack left 11 people injured.

Three children and one teacher suffered serious injuries and required emergency medical treatment, while seven others were treated at the scene.

The group had reportedly stopped for lunch along a trail when the bear emerged from the surrounding forest.

Teachers attempted to protect the children using available bear deterrents, including bear spray and bear bangers.

Despite an extensive search following that incident, authorities were unable to locate the animal believed to have been responsible.

The latest deaths have renewed concerns among residents about the dangers of wildlife encounters in the region.

NUXALK NATION LEADERS EXPRESS THEIR CONDOLENCES

The tᩚraɢedy has also deeply affected the Nuxalk Nation, whose traditional territory includes the Bella Coola area.

Elected Chief Samuel Schooner released a statement expressing sympathy for the victims’ family and the wider community.

He acknowledged that the incident would bring back painful memories for people affected by the previous year’s bear attack.

He said the community understood firsthand the trauma that such incidents could bring to families, survivors and residents.

His message reflected the collective grief being felt throughout Bella Coola.

A GOFUNDME CAMPAIGN SUPPORTS THE FAMILY

Following the deaths, a fundraising campaign was established to help the family with funeral expenses.

The campaign reflects the support being offered by friends, relatives and members of the wider community as they navigate the devastating loss of two loved ones.

For Jenny’s children, siblings and grandchildren, the coming days will be especially difficult.

They have lost a mother, grandmother, daughter and sister.

And for Selah’s loved ones, the loss of a young woman whose life was only beginning makes the tᩚraɢedy even harder to comprehend.

TWO LIVES, ONE UNBREAKABLE BOND

Jenny and Selah had gone out for what appeared to be an ordinary walk together.

It was an activity they enjoyed, in an area they knew, surrounded by the natural environment that had been part of their lives for years.

But they never returned home.

Their deaths have left a family grieving two generations of loved ones at once and a community struggling to understand how such a tᩚraɢedy could happen so close to home.

Jenny will be remembered as a talented artist, a devoted mother of four and a compassionate woman who dedicated her professional life to helping others.

Selah will be remembered as a gentle young woman with a love of art, ballet, animals and the outdoors.

Their story is not simply one of a suspected wildlife attack. It is also the story of a mother and daughter who shared their lives, interests and love of nature.

For those who knew them, the memories of their time together will remain.

May Jennifer Balcarras and Selah Reed rest in peace. Our thoughts are with their family, friends and everyone affected by this heartbreaking tᩚraɢedy.
