COLLEGE CHEERLEADER, 19, KILLED IN HALLOWEEN PARTY śh́óóting AS EIGHT OTHERS ARE INJURED

Giana Dettloff had been visiting a close friend when gunfire erupted at an off-campus Halloween gathering in Illinois. Her family is now mourning a young woman they say brought joy and energy wherever she went.

A 19-year-old college student and cheerleader was killed, and eight other people were injured after gunfire erupted at a Halloween party in Bloomington, Illinois, early Sunday morning, November 1, 2026.

Giana Dettloff, from Carol Stream, Illinois, was among a crowd of approximately 150 to 200 people attending an off-campus gathering near Illinois Wesleyan University when the śh́óóting broke out shortly after 1:20 a.m.

She had reportedly traveled to the area to visit one of her closest friends, never imagining that the night would end in tᩚraɢedy.

The young woman was a student at North Central College in Naperville, where she participated in the college’s cheerleading program. Her family remembered her as a bright, energetic person whose positive spirit made an impression on everyone around her.

A NIGHT OF CELEBRATION TURNED INTO CHAOS

According to Bloomington Police Chief Jamal Simington, the gathering took place in a shared backyard near the 100 block of East Division Street.

The Halloween celebration had attracted a large number of young people, including high school and college students.

An officer responding to an unrelated call nearby suddenly heard approximately 10 gunshots.

The officer arrived at the scene within a minute and found multiple people suffering from gunshot wounds.

Police immediately began providing emergency medical assistance while additional officers and emergency responders rushed to help the injured.

Authorities ultimately identified nine śh́óóting victims, ranging in age from 16 to 22.

Giana was the only person who did not survive. The other eight victims sustained gunshot wounds, with several requiring hospitalization.

Some were initially reported to be in ᑕriᩚtiᩚcal condition. Two individuals who had been critically injured have since improved to stable condition.

Giana’s FAMILY LEFT HEARTBROKEN

McLean County Coroner Kathy Yoder confirmed that Giana died from multiple gunshot wounds to her chest and pelvic region.

Chief Simington later shared that he had spent more than an hour with Giana’s parents following her dєatᩚh.

He described the family as devastated, explaining that Giana was their only daughter.

Her parents remembered her as a sweet, cheerful and energetic young woman who had so much ahead of her.

For those who knew Giana, she was more than a college student or cheerleader. She was a beloved daughter, friend and member of a community that is now struggling to understand how such a gathering could end in such heartbreak.

POLICE SAY PARTY APPEARED PEACEFUL BEFORE GUNFIRE

Despite the large crowd, investigators said the gathering appeared peaceful before the śh́óóting.

Simington explained that officers had been patrolling the surrounding neighborhood throughout the evening because of Halloween celebrations.

No disturbances had been reported or observed before the gunfire erupted.

Investigators are now working to establish what led to the śh́óóting.

As of November 2, authorities had not determined whether one person or multiple individuals opened fire, what prompted the incident, or whether the victims were specifically targeted.

Witnesses reportedly described the suspected šhσσtєr or shooters as Black males. However, police had not announced any arrests, and the investigation remained ongoing.

INVESTIGATORS ASK WITNESSES TO COME FORWARD

Police are urging anyone who attended the Halloween gathering or witnessed what happened to contact the Bloomington Police Department.

Investigators are particularly interested in cellphone videos, photographs, surveillance footage and any other recordings that could help reconstruct the events leading up to the śh́óóting.

Even information that may initially seem insignificant could help authorities establish what happened and identify those responsible.

Meanwhile, Giana’s family has organized a GoFundMe fundraiser to help cover funeral and memorial expenses, as well as other unexpected costs following her dєatᩚh.

The fundraiser offers loved ones and members of the community an opportunity to support the family during an extraordinarily difficult time.

A COMMUNITY SEARCHING FOR ANSWERS

The śh́óóting has left multiple families facing the aftermath of a night that was supposed to be a celebration.

Eight people are recovering from their injuries, while Giana’s loved ones are preparing to say goodbye to a young woman whose future was cut short.

At just 19, she had been pursuing her education, participating in cheerleading and building memories with the people closest to her.

Now, as investigators continue searching for answers, her family is left with the loss of their only daughter.
