YORKSHIRE TIGER ATTACK: FORENSIC FINDINGS REVEAL HOW WILLIAM CHAPMAN DIED AS INVESTIGATION CONTINUES

William Chapman, 24, suffered multiple traumatic injuries after entering the enclosure of a Siberian tiger named Altai at Yorkshire Wildlife Park. An initial post-mortem examination has established the cause of dєatᩚh, but investigators are still awaiting a more detailed report into the full extent of his injuries.

New details have emerged following the tragic dєatᩚh of William Chapman, who was fatally attacked by a tiger at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster, South Yorkshire.

The 24-year-old died on October 10, 2026, after entering the enclosure of Altai, a male Amur tiger, also known as a Siberian tiger.

An inquest opening at Doncaster Coroner’s Court on October 15 heard that an initial post-mortem examination found Chapman had died from multiple traumatic injuries.

Coroner’s officer Caitlin Brookes explained that Chapman had entered the enclosure and was approached by the animal.

She told the hearing that the physical encounter resulted in multiple severe injuries that rapidly led to his dєatᩚh.

Although claims have circulated online suggesting that 12 bones were broken, officials have not confirmed that figure. A more detailed medical report was still awaited at the time of the hearing.

HOW THE FATAL ENCOUNTER UNFOLDED

According to information presented at the inquest, Chapman visited Yorkshire Wildlife Park on October 10.

At approximately 1:30 p.m., he climbed over two fences and entered the tiger enclosure, known as Land of the Tigers.

The hearing was told that Altai approached Chapman before the fatal physical encounter occurred.

Emergency services were contacted shortly afterward.

Park staff secured the tiger, while paramedics attended the scene. However, Chapman was pronounced dead at the wildlife park.

Witnesses later described seeing Chapman approach the large animal before the attack.

Footage of the incident subsequently circulated online, prompting widespread discussion and concern.

Authorities have urged people not to share distressing footage of the incident, particularly because of the impact on Chapman’s grieving family.

WHO WAS WILLIAM CHAPMAN?

William Harry Bruce Chapman was born in 2002 in Chichester and was living in Doncaster at the time of his dєatᩚh.

He worked as a self-employed online trader and had previously appeared as a child performer.

His former stage school, Jackie Palmer Stage School, also paid tribute following the news of his dєatᩚh.

In a statement, his family described him as a “bright, warm and engaging young man” who was deeply loved.

They also revealed that William had experienced significant mєntal health difficulties over a number of years and had been prescribed strong medication.

The family expressed their devastation over his dєatᩚh and asked the public to respect their privacy during an exceptionally difficult period.

They also condemned the circulation of distressing footage and offensive online content relating to the incident.

FAMILY RAISES CONCERNS ABOUT mєntal HEALTH SUPPORT

During the opening of the inquest, the court heard that Chapman had previously been diagnosed with schizophrenia and had experienced episodes of psychosis.

He had been under adult mєntal health services in Doncaster.

However, the hearing was told that he was considered highly functioning and independent, with no care requirements.

Coroner’s officer Brookes confirmed that his family had raised a number of concerns regarding his contact with mєntal health services before his dєatᩚh.

The Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust has since launched an investigation into its involvement with Chapman.

The family said they hoped the authorities would establish why William entered the tiger enclosure and what circumstances may have contributed to the tᩚraɢedy.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO ALTAI THE TIGER?

Following the incident, many members of the public expressed concern about the fate of Altai.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park subsequently confirmed that the tiger was safe and would not be euthanised as a result of the incident.

Altai is an endangered Amur tiger who arrived at the park in 2025 as part of an international conservation project.

The wildlife park also emphasized that the safety and welfare of its animals remained a priority.

The attraction temporarily closed following the incident before reopening on October 16.

Its Land of the Tigers area was also scheduled to reopen following discussions with the relevant authorities.

The park said it was continuing to cooperate with South Yorkshire Police and other agencies investigating the circumstances surrounding Chapman’s dєatᩚh.

INVESTIGATIONS CONTINUE AS FAMILY SEEKS ANSWERS

Several investigations have been launched following the tᩚraɢedy.

City of Doncaster Council, which is responsible for licensing Yorkshire Wildlife Park, confirmed that it had begun a health and safety investigation.

The mєntal health trust is also examining its previous contact with Chapman.

Separately, Yorkshire Ambulance Service announced an investigation after identifying potential inappropriate attempts by two members of staff to access incident-related medical information following the tᩚraɢedy.

The trust said it had informed the Information Commissioner’s Office and Chapman’s family about the matter.

A full inquest into William Chapman’s dєatᩚh is scheduled for March 18, 2027.

Until then, investigators and medical specialists are expected to examine further evidence and establish a more comprehensive account of the circumstances surrounding his dєatᩚh.

For his family, however, the tᩚraɢedy is about much more than an investigation.

They have lost a beloved son whose life, they said, was filled with warmth and promise.

As questions remain about the events inside the enclosure, those closest to William are left mourning a devastating loss and hoping that the forthcoming investigations will provide answers.
