SIX MONTHS AFTER LOSING HER 8-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER, MOTHER FIGHTS FOR ANSWERS — NEW SCHOOL VIDEO RAISES PAINFUL QUESTIONS ABOUT THE RESPONSE

Anna Thompson has kept her daughter Adrian’s bedroom exactly as she left it, preserving the little girl’s drawings, memories and belongings. But six months after the 8-year-old died following a choking emergency at her Texas elementary school, her mother is still searching for answers. Newly released surveillance footage has renewed questions about the school’s response, while Anna is now pushing for changes to Texas law that could give families greater opportunities to hold public school districts accountable.

Six months have passed since Anna Thompson received the phone call every parent fears.

Her 8-year-old daughter,The parents of an 8-year-old who died after choking at her Texas school have released video of those horrific moments as they demand accountability. ABC News' Andrea Fujii has the story., had experienced a medical emergency at school. Anna was told to get to the hospital, but she had no idea just how serious the situation had become.

By the time she arrived, her family’s life had changed forever.

Adrian, a second-grade student at Velma Penny Elementary School in Lindale, Texas, died in the early hours of April 16, 2026, after choking during lunchtime at school the previous day.

Now, months after the tᩚraɢedy, her parents, Anna Thompson and Greg Sher, are speaking publicly about what happened.

They have released school surveillance footage that they believe raises important questions about how quickly staff members recognized Adrian’s distress and responded to her need for help.

For Anna, the footage has brought renewed attention to a day she wishes she could erase.

But her efforts are no longer limited to understanding what happened to her daughter. She also wants changes to the laws that protect public school districts, hoping other families will have stronger options when seeking accountability after a serious incident involving a child.

Medical examiner releases cause of Lindale student's death, rules it an accident | Tyler Morning TelegraphA LITTLE GIRL WHO LOVED ART, COOKING AND GOING TO SCHOOL

Before the tᩚraɢedy, Adrian was known to her family as a creative, energetic and curious little girl.

She was only eight years old, but she already had a personality and interests that made her special to the people around her.

Her obituary described her as expressive, adventurous, empathetic, inquisitive and creative.

She enjoyed art, cooking, Minecraft and organizing things. She also loved spending time with her friends and being part of her school community.

Her mother recalled that Adrian genuinely enjoyed going to school.

She looked forward to each new school year, loved her teachers and friends, and was described as a dedicated student who enjoyed making those around her happy.

Anna also remembered her daughter as someone who loved her teachers and was often considered a teacher’s pet.

Those memories have become especially painful for the family because school had been a place Adrian was excited to attend.

It was supposed to be somewhere she could learn, make friends and enjoy being a child.

Instead, it became the setting of the emergency that took her life.

APRIL 15: THE LUNCHTIME EMERGENCY THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

On April 15, 2026, Adrian was eating lunch at Velma Penny Elementary School in Lindale, Texas.

During the meal, the second-grade student began choking.

Newly released surveillance footage, reviewed by the media, shows Adrian visibly coughing and making gestures toward her throat as she appeared to struggle.

The footage has become a central part of her parents’ continuing efforts to understand the response.

According to reports describing the video, Adrian appeared to seek assistance from adults in the cafeteria.

At one point, a staff member apparently mistook her distress for nausea and directed her toward a trash can and restroom.

Adrian later returned and continued trying to get someone’s attention before eventually making her way toward the school nurse’s office.

The footage has raised difficult questions for her parents about whether the seriousness of the emergency was recognized quickly enough.

One particularly concerning detail reported about the timeline is that approximately five minutes passed before the 911 call was placed.

For a child experiencing a choking emergency, the recognition of the situation and the speed of the response are ᑕriᩚtiᩚcal.

However, the footage does not show every part of the emergency response, and it does not independently establish whether a different response would have changed the outcome.

That distinction is important as the family continues seeking answers.

THE SCHOOL NURSE ATTEMPTED TO SAVE HER LIFE

After Adrian reached the nurse’s office, the school nurse attempted to provide emergency assistance.

According to reports and the investigation into the incident, the nurse performed the Heimlich maneuver, used a LifeVac anti-choking device and administered CPR.

Emergency responders subsequently arrived and continued lifesaving efforts.

Adrian was transported for emergency medical treatment and eventually taken to Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth.

Despite the efforts made to save her, the little girl did not survive.

She died at approximately 1 a.m. on April 16.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office later determined that Adrian’s dєatᩚh was accidental, with choking identified as the cause.

For Anna and Greg, however, the medical determination did not answer every question they had about the events at school.

They wanted to understand the timeline, the decisions made during the emergency and whether the response could have been different.

NEWLY RELEASED VIDEO BRINGS THE FAMILY’S QUESTIONS BACK INTO FOCUS

Months after Adrian’s dєatᩚh, her parents decided to share surveillance footage from the school.

The video has attracted renewed public attention because it provides a visual account of portions of the events leading up to the emergency response.

Anna has described what she saw as deeply concerning and different from what she had expected.

For the family, the footage is not simply a record of a terrible day.

It represents an opportunity to examine what happened and ask questions they believe still deserve answers.

The parents have questioned whether Adrian’s signs of distress were recognized appropriately and whether the emergency response began as quickly as it should have.

Reports have also raised concerns about the equipment used during the incident, including the use of an adult-sized mask with an anti-choking suction device rather than a child-sized one.

These details have added to the family’s concerns about the circumstances surrounding the emergency.

The footage itself does not show all medical treatment inside the nurse’s office, and no independent finding has established that a different intervention would have saved Adrian.

Nevertheless, Anna believes that families deserve a clear understanding of how schools respond when a child experiences a life-threatening emergency.

THE INVESTIGATION DID NOT END THE FAMILY’S QUESTIONS

Following Adrian’s dєatᩚh, the Texas Rangers investigated the incident.

The investigation concluded that no criminal offense had occurred in connection with the tᩚraɢedy.

The medical examiner separately classified Adrian’s dєatᩚh as accidental.

However, Anna has questioned the scope of the investigation.

In an interview with KETK, she said investigators did not conduct witness interviews, leaving the family with questions about how the events were examined.

“There was no interviews done during that investigation and so it left a lot of questions unanswered for us,” Anna said.

Her concerns reflect the family’s experience and their desire for a more complete understanding of the incident.

The official findings have not established criminal wrongdoing by school employees.

But for Adrian’s parents, the absence of criminal charges does not mean every question about school procedures, emergency communication and the response has been resolved.

They continue to seek information that could help them understand what happened to their daughter.

A MOTHER’S FIGHT TO CHANGE TEXAS LAW

Anna’s efforts have now expanded beyond the specific circumstances of Adrian’s dєatᩚh.

She is advocating for changes to Texas laws involving sovereign immunity, a legal doctrine that can limit when government entities, including public school districts, may be held financially responsible through lawsuits.

Her concern is that families whose children experience serious emergencies while under the care of public schools may face significant legal barriers when seeking accountability.

Anna wants lawmakers to reconsider those protections and examine whether families should have stronger legal options when a child is seriously injured or diᩚєs at school.

Speaking to KETK, she expressed concern about the protections available to public school districts.

She said parents across Texas deserve to know what happens when a child is seriously injured or diᩚєs while in the school’s care.

Her campaign is rooted in the belief that parents should have meaningful ways to seek answers when something goes terribly wrong.

For Anna, changing the law would not bring Adrian back.

But she hopes it could make a difference for another family in the future.

She wants Adrian’s story to encourage a broader discussion about school safety, emergency preparedness and the responsibilities schools have when children are entrusted to their care.

ADRIAN’S BEDROOM REMAINS EXACTLY AS SHE LEFT IT

While the legal questions continue, Anna and her family are also facing the deeply personal reality of living without Adrian.

At home, her bedroom has been preserved just as she left it.

Her mother has chosen not to change the room because it remains a place filled with reminders of the little girl they miss.

Anna described it as Adrian’s world, a space that reflects who her daughter was and the things she loved.

Walking into the room allows the family to remain connected to the memories of her childhood.

The drawings, belongings and familiar surroundings represent a life that was full of personality, curiosity and promise.

For many grieving parents, everyday objects can become incredibly meaningful after losing a child.

A room, a favorite toy or something as simple as a familiar arrangement of belongings can bring back memories that feel both comforting and heartbreaking.

Anna’s decision to preserve the room reflects her desire to keep a part of Adrian’s world untouched.

It is a reminder that Adrian was more than the circumstances of her dєatᩚh.

She was a daughter, a student, a friend and a little girl who loved creating things, cooking and spending time with the people she cared about.

‘YOU HAVE TO TAKE IT DAY BY DAY’

Anna has also spoken about the difficult process of learning to live with the loss of a child.

She acknowledged that losing a child is something no parent can truly prepare for.

In her conversation with KETK, she encouraged other grieving families to take things one day at a time.

There is no simple timetable for grief, and no single way to process such an enormous loss.

For the Thompson family, remembering Adrian and seeking answers have become two parts of the same journey.

They want to preserve the person she was while also understanding the circumstances that led to her dєatᩚh.

The newly released footage has reopened painful memories, but it has also given the family another reason to continue asking questions.

They hope that speaking publicly will encourage schools and policymakers to take a closer look at emergency procedures and the legal protections surrounding public education.

A LEGACY THAT HER FAMILY HOPES WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Six months after Adrian’s dєatᩚh, Anna Thompson is still fighting.

She is fighting to understand the final moments of her daughter’s life, to preserve her memory and to encourage changes that could help protect other children.

The Texas Rangers’ investigation found no criminal offense, and the medical examiner ruled Adrian’s dєatᩚh accidental. The family’s questions about the school’s response and the investigation, however, remain central to their efforts.

The school district has said it cooperated with the investigation. Reports have also indicated that the district updated safety procedures, provided additional staff training and introduced policies intended to improve emergency responses.

For Adrian’s parents, those steps are important, but they do not erase the questions they continue to raise.

They want parents to feel confident that when they send their children to school each morning, the adults responsible for their care are prepared to recognize and respond to an emergency.

And they want Adrian’s story to be remembered for more than the heartbreaking way her life ended.

She was a little girl who loved art, cooking, learning and spending time with her friends.

She had a bedroom filled with memories, a family who adored her and a future that should have held so many possibilities.

Six months later, her mother still keeps her room untouched. But she refuses to let the questions surrounding Adrian’s final day disappear.

For Anna Thompson, the fight is now about more than one family.

It is about making sure that other parents have answers, that schools take emergency preparedness seriously and that children are protected when they are away from home.

Adrian cannot return to the classroom she once loved.

But her mother’s hope is that her story will help make those classrooms safer for the children who are still there.
