From Rural Missions in Vinces to the Altar in Guayaquil: The Life of Service That Ended When a Crucifix Fell

Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari lived a life defined by the Redemptorist charism of bringing the Gospel to the most abandoned. Born November 6, 1973, in Cuenca, Ecuador, he entered the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, founded in 1732 by Saint Alphonsus Liguori, professing vows on the feast of the ᴀssumption in 2000 and receiving priestly ordination on October 15, 2005. His ministry unfolded across southern and coastal Ecuador: Loja, where he strengthened youth groups and family catechesis; Durán, where he organized food-support initiatives and vocational workshops for young people at risk; then Vinces in Los Ríos province, where he served as a pioneer of the Redemptorist presence, pastor of San Lorenzo parish for several years, and a missionary who carried the message into remote rural communities. He spent roughly nine years in Manta before arriving in Guayaquil about four years before his dєatᩚh, becoming parish priest of Our Lady of Perpetual Help (Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro / Perpetuo Socorro) in the Central Vicariate, at the church on José Mascote and Calicuchima streets.

Throughout these ᴀssignments he promoted Eucharistic adoration with particular intensity, remaining long in prayer after exposition, a practice colleagues attributed to his idenтιтy as a true son of Saint Alphonsus. Those who knew him uniformly describe a man of pure heart and ready smile that created immediate closeness, free of any trace of ill intent, always calm, patient, and tolerant, hardworking, self-sacrificing, simple, approachable, and full of human warmth. He was welcoming to the point of ensuring visitors had something to eat or drink; his homilies were straightforward; he collaborated readily with educational insтιтutions and paid careful attention to the sick. Outside formal ministry he enjoyed the cinema, walking, and swimming, and family members later recalled an uncle who played with nieces and nephews, visited his parents and sisters regularly, and stayed attentive to their needs.

On October 16, 2026, the archdiocese had publicly congratulated him on another year of priestly service; the next evening he was livestreaming the Saturday Mᴀss from his own profile when the large wooden crucifix mounted on the sanctuary wall behind him detached, fell forward, and struck him on the head as he faced the congregation. He collapsed and did not rise. The footage, later removed by the parish for sensitivity yet widely shared, captured the shouts for an ambulance and the rush of parishioners. The Archdiocese of Guayaquil, under Cardinal Luis Gerardo Cabrera Herrera, announced that night that Father Patricio had gone to the Father’s House. A memorial Eucharist followed on October 18 at the same church, drawing bishops, priests, and the faithful; his body was then taken to Cuenca for burial at Santa Ana Cemetery on October 20.

Fellow Redemptorist Father Pedro Calle remembered him as having died doing what he loved most—the Eucharist—and as having died embracing the cross. The Father General of the Congregation, Rogério Gomes, confirmed the tragic accident to the worldwide Redemptorist family and asked for prayers. In the weeks afterward the archbishop announced systematic technical inspections of all 161 parishes in Guayaquil, covering structures and the mountings of religious objects, precisely so that no similar accident would recur. The parish confirmed the crucifix in question had not been rehung. Family members, while accepting the possibility of divine providence, publicly requested a full technical investigation into how the mounting failed. Police had preliminarily labeled the dєatᩚh accidental. For the communities he served—from the remote rural zones of Vinces to the urban parish in Guayaquil—the lasting memory is of a missionary who consistently said yes, who placed the Eucharist and the poor at the center of his life, and who left this world at the altar in the very act of celebrating the sacrament he cherished. His twenty-one years of priesthood, ended two days after its anniversary, continue to be invoked as a sign of grace by those who knew the quiet consistency of his service
