RICKSHAW DRIVER CHARGED AFTER MOTHER-OF-TWO diᩚєs FOLLOWING WESTLIFE CONCERT 𝔠r𝘢sh

Danielle O’Keane, 37, suffered catastrophic injuries in a collision in Dublin after attending a Westlife concert with friends. The driver now faces charges over her dєatᩚh and the alleged endangerment of three other women.

A 37-year-old rickshaw driver has been charged in connection with the dєatᩚh of a mother of two who suffered catastrophic injuries in a 𝔠r𝘢sh following a Westlife concert in Dublin.

Gabriel Pereira, a Brazilian national, appeared before Dublin District Court on Wednesday, November 4, where he was charged with dangerous driving causing the dєatᩚh of Danielle O’Keane, 37, from Saval, Newry, County Down.

He is also accused of endangering the lives of three other women during the same incident.

The 𝔠r𝘢sh happened on the night of September 26 at North Wall Quay, Dublin, as Danielle and three friends were travelling by rickshaw after attending Westlife’s concert at the 3Arena.

Danielle and her friends had been enjoying the concert and were travelling to meet her husband after the show when the incident occurred.

According to evidence presented in court, the rickshaw was travelling in a cycle lane when the driver allegedly attempted to move out and merge into traffic.

The vehicle struck a concrete bollard, causing Danielle to fall beneath the carriage and sustain what the court heard were catastrophic injuries.

She was taken by ambulance to the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, where she spent several days receiving intensive medical care.

Despite efforts to save her, Danielle died on October 1.

Her dєatᩚh left her husband and two young children facing an unimaginable loss.

Pereira, 37, appeared before Judge Michèle Finan at Dublin District Court after Gardaí received instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions to bring the charges.

When the allegation of dangerous driving causing dєatᩚh was put to him, Garda Sergeant Mark O’Neill told the court that Pereira replied: “I don’t think I did.”

He gave no response when the second charge, relating to the alleged endangerment of the three other women, was put to him.

The court also heard that Pereira had arrived in Ireland on a travel visa just eight days before the incident.

Sergeant O’Neill raised concerns about the possibility that the accused could leave the country, prompting the prosecution to oppose bail.

STRICT BAIL CONDITIONS IMPOSED

Judge Finan ultimately granted bail, while emphasizing the importance of the presumption of innocence.

The decision came with several conditions, including a €20,000 independent surety.

Pereira must remain in custody until an approved bailperson is available to secure his release.

If released, he must live at his current address, report to Store Street Garda Station twice daily and observe a nightly curfew between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.

He is also required to provide a 24-hour contact number, apply for any travel documents and refrain from driving any motor vehicle.

The case was adjourned, with Pereira due to appear at Cloverhill District Court on November 11.

A FAMILY LEFT TO MOURN

Danielle’s dєatᩚh has brought renewed attention to the circumstances surrounding the 𝔠r𝘢sh and concerns about the safety of rickshaw transport in Dublin.

Her case has also prompted wider discussion about the regulation of these vehicles and the protections passengers can expect when using them.

For Danielle’s family, however, the legal proceedings come after a devastating loss.

What began as a night out with friends to enjoy a Westlife concert ended in a tᩚraɢedy that took a young mother away from her husband and two children.

The charges against the driver remain allegations before the court. The case is ongoing.
