BRITISH GRANDMOTHER, 69, diᩚєs TRYING TO SAVE HER 10-YEAR-OLD GRANDDAUGHTER FROM POWERFUL SEA CURRENTS DURING SPAIN HOLIDAY
A British grandmother has lost her life after desperately entering the sea to save her young granddaughter, who was swept away by powerful currents during a family holiday in Spain.
Teresa Ford, 69, drowned at Cavalleria Beach in Menorca after strong winds pushed her 10-year-old granddaughter’s inflatable away from the shore and towards a rocky area.
The heartbreaking incident happened at around 1 p.m. on the final day of the family’s holiday, turning what should have been a relaxing afternoon by the sea into a devastating family tᩚraɢedy.
While the little girl, her mother and grandfather survived, Teresa could not be brought back to safety.
Now, her grieving son Andy has spoken out about the family’s ordeal, questioning whether more could have been done to warn visitors about the dangerous sea conditions.
A FAMILY HOLIDAY TURNED INTO A FIGHT FOR SURVIVAL
The family had been enjoying their holiday on the Spanish island of Menorca when strong gusts of wind, reportedly reaching around 30mph, began pushing the child’s inflatable away from the shore.
The young girl was carried towards a rocky cove, where the inflatable overturned and left her struggling in the water.
Seeing their granddaughter in danger, Teresa, her husband and their daughter-in-law Rachel immediately entered the sea in an attempt to reach her.
But the conditions were far more dangerous than they appeared.
According to an account shared by Andy in an open letter to local mayor Joan Palliser, Rachel had initially been standing in water that reached her armpits when she suddenly found herself unable to touch the bottom.
She recognised the signs of a powerful current and urged everyone to return towards the shore.
However, the family had already been caught in the dangerous water.
A GRANDFATHER’S DESPERATE ATTEMPT TO HELP
Andy explained that his father managed to push Rachel towards the rocks before the current swept him away.
Teresa, who had been watching from the shore, then entered the water to help her family.
Despite having an injured shoulder, a previous hip replacement and not being a strong swimmer, the 69-year-old grandmother did not hesitate to try to reach her loved ones.
Rachel eventually managed to get her daughter onto the rocks.
But as she reached safety with the child, she could only watch as the powerful current carried Teresa away.
Andy described the heartbreaking outcome in his letter:
“My father survived. My mother did not.”
His father had also been swept towards the rocks and sustained cuts during the ordeal. He was eventually brought to safety, but Teresa’s life could not be saved.
A GOOD SAMARITAN HELPED SAVE THE MOTHER AND CHILD
Amid the chaos, an unidentified beachgoer stepped forward to help Rachel and her daughter.
According to Andy, the stranger found a rope near the nearby dunes and used it to create a makeshift rescue arrangement.
He tied the rope around his waist and attached a large plastic container to help keep himself afloat before entering the water.
Rachel handed her daughter to the man and urged him to leave, but he refused to abandon them until he had helped bring both mother and child to safety.
Andy later expressed his family’s gratitude to the stranger, saying they did not know his identity or how to contact him.
His actions may have helped prevent an even greater tᩚraɢedy that afternoon.
A 10-YEAR-OLD GIRL BLAMES HERSELF FOR HER GRANDMOTHER’S dєatᩚh
Perhaps the most heartbreaking detail shared by Andy is the emotional impact the incident has had on his young daughter.
The 10-year-old girl survived the terrifying experience, but she is now struggling with the loss of her grandmother.
In his letter, Andy revealed that his daughter had already begun blaming herself for what happened.
“My daughter is ten years old, and she is already saying that it was her fault,” he wrote.
He also described the unbearable grief experienced by the family members who survived.
Andy said he and his wife were still awake at six o’clock in the morning, holding each other and crying.
His father, meanwhile, initially believed that his daughter-in-law and granddaughter had not survived.
When he eventually reached the shore and saw Teresa lying there, he struggled to understand what had happened.
The couple had been married for 45 years.
SON QUESTIONS THE LACK OF BEACH SAFETY WARNINGS
Following the tᩚraɢedy, Andy raised concerns about the safety arrangements at Cavalleria Beach.
In an emotional open letter to local mayor Joan Palliser, he questioned why there had apparently been no warning signs alerting visitors to the risk of dangerous currents.
He said his family believed Teresa’s dєatᩚh could potentially have been prevented and wanted answers about what safety measures were in place.
Andy also asked what changes local authorities intended to introduce to prevent another family from experiencing a similar tᩚraɢedy.
The local mayor acknowledged that Cavalleria Beach is particularly exposed to strong northern winds, which can create dangerous sea conditions.
He also noted that tourists unfamiliar with the area might not recognise the risks posed by the currents.
The beach’s seasonal lifeguard service had reportedly ended on October 15, leaving no professional lifeguards on duty when the incident occurred.
However, questions about the adequacy of warnings and safety arrangements remain matters for the relevant authorities to address.
AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE tᩚraɢedy
Emergency services, including paramedics, police and firefighters, attended the scene after the incident.
Despite their efforts, Teresa could not be revived.
Her husband received treatment for injuries sustained during the rescue attempt, while Rachel and the young girl were treated for shock and distress.
Spain’s Guardia Civil launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the drowning.
The incident has renewed attention on the dangers of rip currents, strong coastal winds and swimming conditions that can change rapidly, particularly at beaches without lifeguard supervision.
A GRANDMOTHER’S FINAL ACT OF LOVE
Teresa’s dєatᩚh has left her family facing a loss that will be difficult to comprehend, particularly for the granddaughter she was trying to save.
The family had been preparing to celebrate her 70th birthday in December.
Instead, they are now left with memories of a holiday that ended in unimaginable heartbreak.
For Andy, the tᩚraɢedy is not only about losing his mother. It is also about making sure that other families are not placed in the same situation.
He hopes that answers will emerge and that improvements to beach safety will help prevent another family from suffering a similar loss.
Teresa entered the water because someone she loved was in danger.
Her granddaughter survived, but the family will forever remember the grandmother who risked everything in an attempt to bring her home safely.
