TOM JONES’ EMOTIONAL FINAL NIGHT ON THE VOICE UK: LEGENDARY SINGER REVEALS HE DIDN’T WANT TO LEAVE AFTER CATE MCHUGH’S WIN
It was supposed to be a night of celebration, but behind the excitement of The Voice UK’s 2026 final was an emotional goodbye that left many viewers feeling heartbroken.
Sir Tom Jones, one of the programme’s most recognisable coaches, ended his latest journey on the ITV singing competition on Saturday, October 31, as his contestant Cate McHugh was crowned the 2026 winner.
For the 86-year-old music legend, it was a particularly meaningful victory. But it also marked the end of his time as a full-time coach on the show.
And there is one detail that makes his departure even more emotional: Tom has made it clear that leaving was never what he wanted.
‘
I DID NOT WANT TO LEAVE THE VOICE’
Back in September, Tom addressed speculation about his future on the programme in a statement shared on Instagram.
He made his feelings unmistakably clear.
“To be clear, I did not want to leave The Voice as I love the show and really appreciate the audience.”
The singer explained that ITV had made the decision some time earlier, although he had only recently been informed.
According to Tom, the reason initially given involved financial difficulties relating to insurance.
He also said that the broadcaster had discussed offering him a much-reduced role, which would have involved making appearances without being involved in the competition from the beginning.
It was not an arrangement he was happy with.
Tom ended his statement with a remark that captured both his frustration and his sense of humour:
“There’s never a good time to fire an 86-year-old who’s still pretty good at his job.”
A FINAL VICTORY THAT MADE THE GOODBYE EVEN MORE SPECIAL
Despite the disappointment surrounding his departure, Tom had one last reason to celebrate.
His contestant, Welsh singer Cate McHugh, won The Voice UK 2026 after impressing viewers throughout the competition.
Cate faced strong competition from Monique Nicholson-Porter, Naná Aldrin-Quaye and Frank Raven before securing the title.
Her victory was particularly meaningful given her degenerative sight condition, which has left her registered blind.
As she celebrated her achievement, Cate said:
“Thank you, I did it.”
For Tom, seeing his contestant lift the trophy was a fitting way to finish his final season as a full-time coach.
It was also another reminder of the special connection he has built with the artists who have sat in his team over the years.
FANS QUESTION THE SHOW’S FUTURE WITHOUT HIM
Following the final, viewers took to social media to express their sadness about Tom’s departure.
Many praised his contribution to the programme, with some questioning why ITV would choose to part ways with such an experienced and popular coach.
One viewer wrote:
“He’s not just a coach on The Voice UK. He’s part of its heart and soul.”
Another said that Tom would be greatly missed, while others argued that the show would not feel quite the same without him.
His departure has also prompted questions about whether the programme can maintain its familiar appeal with a completely different coaching line-up.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT FOR THE VOICE UK?
The programme is preparing for a major change ahead of its next series in 2027.
Cheryl and Aitch are joining the coaching panel alongside returning stars will.i.am and Kelly Rowland.
Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones are also leaving their coaching roles, while Emma Willis is stepping away from presenting.
Stacey Solomon and Alesha Dixon are taking over as the show’s new presenters.
ITV has thanked Tom for his years on the programme, describing him as irreplaceable and recognising the unforgettable moments he brought to the competition.
The broadcaster has also said it remains in discussions with Tom and his team about possible future involvement, although he will not return as a full-time coach.
A LEGENDARY CHAPTER COMES TO AN END
Since joining The Voice in 2012, Tom Jones has become one of the most familiar faces in the show’s history.
His experience, humour and unmistakable voice helped make him a favourite among viewers and contestants alike.
Now, as the red chairs prepare to welcome a new generation of coaches, fans are left looking back on the moments that made his time on the programme so memorable.
And perhaps the most fitting ending was seeing Cate McHugh take the crown under his guidance.
He may not have chosen to say goodbye, but he certainly had a winning final night.
For millions of viewers, Sir Tom Jones will always be part of what made The Voice UK special.
