Peter Wright and His Wife Lin Look Back on More Than 30 Years of Cherished Memories at the Great Yorkshire Show

For television viewers across Britain, Peter Wright is much more than a familiar face. As one of the best-known stars of Channel 5’s The Yorkshire Vet, he has spent decades bringing the extraordinary world of veterinary medicine into people’s homes, sharing emotional animal stories, remarkable recoveries and the everyday challenges faced by farmers and pet owners.

But behind his successful television career is another important part of his life: his wife, Lin, who has shared his journey through the many years of hard work, unforgettable experiences and public recognition.

One place that holds particularly special memories for the couple is the Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. Peter and Lin have been visiting the celebrated agricultural event together for more than three decades, making it a longstanding tradition throughout their relationship.

For Peter, the show represents far more than an opportunity to meet fans or discuss his television career. It connects him to the countryside, farming communities and childhood memories that helped shape his lifelong passion for animals.

A Childhood Passion That Became a Lifelong Career

Peter Wright’s connection to Yorkshire’s agricultural community began long before he became a household name.

Growing up with a love of animals and the countryside, he developed an interest in veterinary medicine that would eventually become his profession.

He began his veterinary career in 1982 and later worked alongside the legendary veterinary surgeon Alf Wight, better known to millions of readers as James Herriot.

Peter joined Skeldale Veterinary Centre in Thirsk in 1996, continuing the traditions associated with one of Britain’s most celebrated veterinary practices.

His experiences working with animals of all shapes and sizes eventually helped make him a familiar face on television.

The Yorkshire Vet Made Him a Household Name

Peter became widely recognised through Channel 5’s The Yorkshire Vet, a programme that gives viewers an insight into the challenges and emotional moments of veterinary life in rural England.

The show follows vets as they travel across Yorkshire, treating everything from beloved family pets to farm animals.

Over the years, audiences have watched Peter handle complicated medical cases, reassure worried owners and celebrate the moments when animals recover against the odds.

His warm personality, Yorkshire humour and genuine compassion have helped establish a particularly strong connection with viewers.

Although Peter initially had reservations about appearing on television, his wife Lin encouraged him to consider the opportunity. He eventually agreed, and the programme became a major part of his professional life.

More Than 30 Years of Memories at the Great Yorkshire Show

Among the places most closely associated with Peter and Lin’s shared experiences is the Great Yorkshire Show.

The couple have attended the event together for well over 30 years, returning to celebrate the countryside, farming traditions and agricultural achievements that mean so much to them.

In May 2026, organisers announced that Peter would return as a special guest at the 167th Great Yorkshire Show.

His appearance was scheduled for Wednesday, July 15, when he was expected to share stories from his veterinary career and discuss his recent filming experiences in India.

Peter has previously spoken about attending the show from childhood, recalling the excitement of visiting the cattle sheds, sheep, goats and pigs with his family.

Those early experiences helped create a lasting appreciation for agriculture and the people who work tirelessly to care for animals.

Speaking about the importance of the event in July 2026, Peter highlighted the need to inspire younger generations and help them understand where their food comes from.

He also praised the importance of supporting farming communities and maintaining high standards of animal welfare.

A Career Built on Compassion and Dedication

Peter’s professional journey has not always been easy.

Veterinary work involves long hours, difficult decisions and emotionally challenging situations. Behind every successful treatment is a combination of experience, patience and dedication.

In 2021, after more than 40 years associated with Skeldale Veterinary Centre, Peter moved on to continue working as a mixed-practice vet at Grace Lane Veterinary Practice in Kirkbymoorside.

The decision marked an important new chapter in his career, allowing him to continue treating farm animals while remaining involved in television.

Rather than retiring, Peter made it clear that he still had plenty of enthusiasm for his profession.

His dedication has continued to make him a respected figure among animal lovers and farming communities.

A Legacy Beyond Television

For many viewers, Peter Wright represents the traditional values of Yorkshire: kindness, hard work, humour and a deep connection to the countryside.

His relationship with Lin, his decades of veterinary experience and his continued involvement in agricultural events all form part of a remarkable personal and professional journey.

The Great Yorkshire Show remains an especially meaningful place in that story, connecting memories from his younger years with the career and public recognition he enjoys today.

More than 30 years of visits have given Peter and Lin countless shared experiences at an event that celebrates the very things they have long appreciated.

And while television fame may have introduced Peter to millions of people, his passion for animals and his connection to Yorkshire remain at the heart of his story.

For the many fans who have followed his journey, those are the memories worth celebrating.
