Grand Jury Concludes Nolan Wells’ dєatᩚh Was Consistent with Drowning and Finds No Evidence of Criminal or Racial Motivation

A Jackson County grand jury in Mississippi has determined that the dєatᩚh of 18-year-old Nolan Wells was consistent with drowning and that there is no credible evidence of criminal activity or racial motivation surrounding the case. The panel’s report, released in late September 2026, followed a detailed review of autopsy findings, witness statements, digital records, and materials collected during the official investigation.

Nolan Wells, a Black college football player, joined a group of friends for a Fourth of July outing to Horn Island, a barrier island located roughly ten miles off the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The group traveled on several boats. Later in the day, mechanical problems forced some of the friends to return to the mainland. Wells remained on the island. Two days later, on July 6, his body was found in the water near the island’s shore.

Both the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office and an independent forensic pathologist retained by the Wells family concluded that the cause and manner of dєatᩚh were undetermined. Drowning was described as a diagnosis reached by excluding other possibilities. The grand jury report stated that the position of the body, its condition when discovered, the timing of the recovery, and the location where it was found were all consistent with drowning. Jurors noted bruising on the back of Wells’ head that was not fatal, along with possible bruising in other areas, but found no evidence of any life-threatening injury or underlying disease.

During the proceedings, a witness testified under oath that he observed Wells slip awkwardly from the side of a boat around 3:30 p.m. on July 4. The witness could not confirm whether the young man struck his head during the fall. After the incident, Wells continued interacting with others and showed no obvious signs of injury. The grand jury said it could not determine with certainty that the fall produced the observed bruising.

The panel also addressed a range of public claims that had circulated widely after Wells’ dєatᩚh. It found no evidence that any of the individuals who traveled to or from Horn Island that day engaged in criminal conduct connected to the tᩚraɢedy. The report described certain accusations directed at the group of friends and their families as false and malicious. It further noted that remaining on the island during busy holiday periods was not unusual and that Wells was not the only Black visitor present on Horn Island on July 4.

Jackson County District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath stated publicly that there is “absolutely no evidence” the disappearance and dєatᩚh were racially motivated. In a video statement accompanying the release of the report, she said external voices and online commentators had attempted to use the case to sow division. She emphasized that Wells’ friends cared for him and that he made the decision to stay on the island that day.

Attorney Ben Crump, who represents the Wells family, strongly criticized the grand jury’s conclusions. He said the decision left more questions than answers and that the family would continue seeking a full understanding of what happened to Nolan. Crump described the outcome as an attempt to close the matter without resolving the family’s remaining concerns.

The grand jury returned a no true bill, meaning no criminal charges will be brought against anyone based on the evidence presented. Toxicology results showed no evidence of cocaine use, and investigators found that Wells had purchased alcohol with a fake identification prior to the outing. The report concluded that the dєatᩚh investigation revealed no support for claims of foul play or racial targeting.

The findings mark the formal end of the criminal inquiry into the circumstances of Nolan Wells’ dєatᩚh, though the family’s civil representatives have indicated they intend to keep pursuing answers outside the criminal process.
